Hamida Banu, nicknamed the ‘Amazon of Aligarh’, was born in the early 1900s into a family of wrestlers near Aligarh in Uttar Pradesh. She began wrestling at a young age and won more than 300 competitions during her career in the 1940s and 1950s.

Before Hamida Banu, women weren’t encouraged to do sports because of society’s rules. But Hamida Banu worked hard and got lots of praise. She even challenged men to wrestle her, saying she’d marry whoever beat her. Hamida Banu won matches against wrestlers from other countries too, like Russia. People knew her name everywhere because of her wins. Newspapers often talked about what she ate and how she trained.
