Tragic Death at NIT Durgapur:   Arpan, a mechanical engineering student, hailed from Hooghly Bandel and resided in the Debanandapur village Panchayat. According to the police, he returned to his hostel after completing his exam on Sunday afternoon. It was his classmates who discovered him hanging upon returning to the hostel.

Immediate efforts were made to rescue him, and he was initially taken to the institution’s medical center. Subsequently, he was transferred to a private hospital at Gandhi Mor, where doctors unfortunately pronounced him dead. Initially, the police suspected that Arpan might have taken his own life due to mental distress. His body was then sent to Durgapur Mahakuma Hospital for post-mortem examination.

Family Recounts Tragic Events Leading to Arpan’s Death

Tragic Death at NIT Durgapur:  Upon learning of Arpan’s tragic demise, his parents immediately traveled to Durgapur on Sunday night, only to return to their home in Bandel on Monday morning.

Recalling the events leading up to his death, Arpan’s mother, Polly Ghosh, revealed that she had a phone conversation with her son at 8:30 before he left for his exam.

During the call, Arpan expressed feeling tense, to which Polly reassured him. After taking the exam, Arpan contacted his father, expressing dissatisfaction with how it went. In response, his father encouraged him to do better in the next exam. Tragically, a similar phone call occurred an hour later, indicating a distressing repetition of events.

Delays and Alleged Oxygen Shortage in Arpan’s Medical Treatment Raise Concerns

Tragic Death at NIT Durgapur:  According to information from NIT sources, Arpan still had a pulse when he was discovered and brought for help.

However, upon reaching the institute’s medical center, there was a delay as he was asked to present his identity card, which wasn’t readily available from his hostel. Once the card was obtained, the doctor examined him and advised shifting him to another hospital.

Unfortunately, there were further delays as the ambulance took time to arrive, leading to complaints from those present. Some students and Arpan’s family alleged that the ambulance lacked oxygen supply.

Additionally, a member of the Debanandpur Village Panchayat, Piangshu Dhar, expressed concerns over the lack of oxygen provision in the ambulance and the delays caused by the ID card verification, attributing these factors to mounting mental pressure on the situation.

NIT Director Resigns Amid Student Protest Over Arpan’s Death

Tragic Death at NIT Durgapur:  Following Arpan’s tragic passing, a group of students staged a protest against NIT Director Arvind Chaubey on Sunday evening.

In response to the situation, the director tendered his resignation. In his resignation letter, he cited negligence in the treatment provided by the NIT Durgapur authorities as the cause of the student’s death.

NIT sources have indicated that an investigative committee will be established to look into the circumstances surrounding the student’s demise.
