Deadly Tornadoes Sweep US

Tornadoes Kill 22

Tornadoes and severe thunderstorms have resulted in the loss of at least 22 lives and extensive damage to homes, businesses, and infrastructure across multiple states in the US. Further thunderstorms, accompanied by strong winds, hail, and flash floods, are anticipated. This series of tornadoes over the last couple of months is attributed to a consistent presence of warm, humid air.

Severe Weather Threatens East Coast

A succession of intense storms moved through the central and southern regions of the United States during the Memorial Day weekend. These storms, including tornadoes and severe thunderstorms, have claimed the lives of at least 22 individuals and caused widespread destruction to residences, commercial properties, and power infrastructure. Meteorologists have noted that the severe weather has now progressed towards the East Coast, spanning a wide area from Alabama to New York on Monday. They have issued alerts indicating the likelihood of additional thunderstorms, strong winds, hail, and flash floods.

Tornadoes Target Holiday Coast

A tornado watch has been extended from North Carolina to Maryland, advising millions of holiday-goers to remain vigilant of the weather conditions.

Over the weekend, severe storms resulted in the loss of at least 22 lives. These destructive weather events claimed lives in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Kentucky. The storms occurred in close proximity to an intense, early-season heatwave, which broke records across southern Texas to Florida.

Kentucky: 5 Dead After Storms

During a press conference on Monday, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, who had previously declared a state of emergency, announced that five individuals had lost their lives in the state. The fifth casualty was a 54-year-old man who suffered a heart attack while clearing fallen trees in Caldwell County, located in western Kentucky, according to the governor’s office.

Tornadoes Devastate Communities

Tornadoes Kill 22 also encompassed seven fatalities in Cooke County, Texas, resulting from a tornado on Saturday that ravaged a mobile home park, as confirmed by officials. Additionally, Arkansas reported eight deaths.

Authorities reported two casualties in Mayes County, Oklahoma, located east of Tulsa. Among the injured were attendees at an outdoor wedding.

Numerous communities have been left with shattered homes and widespread power outages. Among them is the small town of Charleston in Kentucky, which sustained a direct hit from a tornado on Sunday night. Governor Beshear indicated that the tornado appeared to be on the ground for approximately 40 miles (64 kilometers).

“It’s a significant mess,” remarked Rob Linton, a resident of Charleston and the fire chief of nearby Dawson Springs, which was struck by a tornado in 2021.

Kentucky Faces More Devastation

“Trees are strewn everywhere, houses displaced, and power lines lie in disarray. There are no utilities available – no water, no electricity,” described Nick Bailey, the Emergency Management Director of Hopkins County, referring to the rural areas hit by the 2021 tornado near the community of Barnsley.

“We had many individuals who were just starting to rebuild their lives, only to face this devastation again,” Bailey remarked to The Associated Press. “It’s almost the exact same locations, the same homes, and everything.”

Governor Beshear has made multiple visits to the region where his father spent his early years, attending ceremonies where residents who lost everything were presented with keys to their new homes.

These visits followed a series of tornadoes on a harrowing night in December 2021, which claimed the lives of 81 individuals in Kentucky.

Biden Offers Aid After Deadly Storms

Governor Beshear expressed relief that the Memorial Day weekend storms did not result in even greater devastation, acknowledging the heightened awareness of Kentuckians regarding severe weather due to past experiences.

As of Monday afternoon, over 400,000 customers in the eastern US were without power, with approximately 125,000 of them in Kentucky alone. A total of 12 states reported at least 10,000 outages earlier in the day, according to PowerOutage.us.

President Biden extended condolences to the families affected by the tragedy. He stated that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is actively assessing the damage on the ground, and he has reached out to governors to determine the federal assistance required.

Understanding Tornadoes

Tornadoes, defined as swiftly rotating columns of air, can form vertical funnels with winds reaching speeds of up to 402 kilometers per hour, spanning about 1.6 kilometers wide and traveling approximately 80 kilometers in length, as reported by National Geographic.

These atmospheric phenomena, commonly referred to as twisters, typically emerge within thunderstorms and are often accompanied by hail.

The most destructive tornadoes stem from massive, long-lasting thunderstorms known as supercells. Supercells develop from around one storm out of every thousand, and roughly one out of every five or six supercells gives rise to a tornado, as explained in the report.

According to DW, supercells can bring about lightning, intense winds, hail, and flash floods.

Although tornadoes can occur at any time of the year, they are more prevalent in the states bordering the Gulf of Mexico during a particular season that commences in early spring.

Science Behind Storm Surge

As reported by National Geographic, tornado season shifts in alignment with the jet stream, with increased tornado activity occurring as it moves further north. April occasionally witnesses more potent twisters compared to May, which typically experiences a higher frequency of tornadoes than any other month.

Although tornadoes can manifest at any time, they tend to occur more frequently in the late afternoon.

Harold Brooks, a senior scientist at the National Severe Storms Laboratory in Norman, informed the Associated Press (AP) that a consistent presence of warm, moist air has contributed to the recent surge in tornadoes over the past couple of months.

This warm, moist air resides at the northern perimeter of a heat dome, bringing temperatures typically associated with midsummer to late May.

In parts of southern Texas on Monday, the heat index, which combines air temperature and humidity to gauge how hot it feels to the human body, approached triple digits.

Moreover, extreme heat was predicted for San Antonio and Dallas. In Florida, both Melbourne and Ft. Pierce set new daily record highs on Monday, reaching 36.7 degrees Celsius. Miami also established a record high of 35.5 degrees Celsius on Sunday.

How Tornadoes Form

Tornadoes are generated when warm, moist air encounters cold, dry air, leading to a collision of contrasting air masses.

Thunderstorms typically arise when the warmer air is displaced by the denser, colder air. Within these thunderstorms, updrafts form as warm air ascends through the colder air. If there are significant changes in wind direction or speed, the updraft can begin to rotate.

This rotating updraft, referred to as a mesocycle, intensifies as it draws in more warm air from the surrounding thunderstorm. Additionally, the jet stream, a powerful atmospheric wind belt, contributes further energy through the influx of cool air.

Water droplets from the moist air within the mesocyclone form a funnel cloud. This funnel expands until it descends from the cloud, becoming a tornado upon reaching the ground.

US Faces Devastating Tornado Season

-Tornadoes Kill 22

While strong storms occur globally, the United States stands out as a major hotspot for tornado activity, experiencing thousands annually.

According to National Geographic, the most intense and hazardous tornadoes often occur in an area known as “Tornado Alley,” encompassing eastern portions of South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, northern Texas, and eastern Colorado.

Each year, tornadoes in the US claim approximately 80 lives and leave over 1,500 individuals injured.

Though tornadoes have occurred in every state, Texas boasts the highest annual average of 120 tornadoes, as reported.

This May has witnessed a troubling surge in tornadoes and severe weather across the country’s midsection.

Last week, tornadoes in Iowa resulted in at least five fatalities and numerous injuries.

Earlier this month, storms claimed eight lives in Houston.

These severe thunderstorms and deadly tornadoes have emerged during a historically severe tornado season, exacerbated by the effects of climate change, which contribute to the heightened intensity of storms worldwide.

April marked the second-highest number of tornadoes recorded in the country.
