Tata’s legacy lives on

Tata’s Heartfelt Legacy: A Will Filled with Compassion Ratan Tata, the esteemed industrialist and philanthropist, passed away on October 9 at 86, leaving behind a Rs 10,000 crore estate thoughtfully divided among family, trusted staff, and charitable causes. His will reflects Tata’s compassionate nature, ensuring those close to him, such as his longtime butler Subbiah, with whom he shared a 30-year bond, and his executive assistant Shantanu Naidu, are recognized. Notably, Tata covered Naidu’s educational expenses abroad and relinquished his stake in Goodfellows, Naidu’s companionship venture for senior citizens.

Tata’s love for animals is highlighted by his provision for lifelong care for his German Shepherd, Tito, who will now be looked after by Rajan Shaw, Tata’s long-time cook. Tata’s wealth distribution also continues his legacy of philanthropy, with his stake in Tata Sons and Tata Motors directed to the Ratan Tata Endowment Foundation (RTEF), an organization supporting charitable efforts since its founding in 2022. The foundation, anticipated to be overseen by Tata Sons Chair N Chandrasekaran, will receive proceeds from the sale of Tata’s startup investments through RNT Associates and RNT Advisers, along with his holdings in Tata Group companies like Tata Digital and Tata Technologies.

Among Tata’s assets are a beach bungalow in Alibaug, a residence on Mumbai’s Juhu Tara Road, and fixed deposits totaling over Rs. 350 crore. His iconic Halekai house in Colaba, managed by a Tata Sons subsidiary, may be repurposed, while his collection of luxury cars could be auctioned or displayed in a museum.

The Bombay High Court will oversee the probate process, which may take several months. Tata’s choice to allocate most of his assets to the RTEF reflects the family’s legacy of using trusts over wills to maintain stability and control. The Tata Trusts board will select a new head to uphold the philanthropic mission that Tata championed, supported by family members Jimmy Tata, Shireen, and Deanna Jejeebhoy, as well as loyal household staff like Subbiah and Naidu.

Tata’s compassion extended beyond humanity

Tata’s Heartfelt Legacy: A Will Filled with Compassion  Shantanu Naidu, a close mentee and executive assistant to Ratan Tata, has been named in Tata’s will, underscoring the deep relationships and philanthropic legacy of the iconic leader. According to a report from *The Times of India*, Tata, who passed away earlier this month at the age of 86, made an extraordinary provision in his will for his cherished German Shepherd, Tito, ensuring “unlimited care” for the beloved pet. This gesture is unique among India’s wealthy elite, highlighting Tata’s compassion. Tito, who has been part of Tata’s life for five to six years and shares a name with a previous pet, will be cared for by Tata’s longtime cook, Rajan Shaw.

Beyond his pet, Tata’s Rs 10,000 crore estate is set to benefit his half-sisters Shireen and Deanna Jejeebhoy, as well as loyal household staff and close associates, including his butler Subbaiah, with whom he shared a three-decade bond. Known for his generosity, Tata often brought designer gifts from his travels for Subbaiah and Rajan.

The will also reflects Tata’s special connection with Naidu, waiving his education loans and relinquishing his stake in Naidu’s companionship startup, Goodfellows. Tata’s estate includes substantial assets, such as a beach bungalow in Alibaug, a two-storey house on Mumbai’s Juhu Tara Road, and fixed deposits exceeding Rs 350 crore. Additionally, his 0.83% stake in Tata Sons, the $165 billion holding company, will be transferred to the Ratan Tata Endowment Foundation (RTEF), continuing the Tata family tradition of supporting philanthropic causes.

The Bombay High Court will oversee the probate process, expected to take several months. Tata’s legacy as a visionary business leader, philanthropist, and animal lover will undoubtedly inspire generations to come.
