In response to remarks from President Trump and Elon Musk, who suggested the crew had been “abandoned” in space by the Biden administration, Wilmore emphasized that the crew was prepared for an extended mission. He explained that unexpected contingencies are common in human spaceflight and that they were fully ready for such a situation. Wilmore also clarified that while Musk had claimed to offer an early return for the crew, they were unaware of such an offer and felt no sense of being stranded.

Starliner commander Barry “Butch” Wilmore stated that politics did not play a role in the crew’s extended stay aboard the International Space Station (ISS), despite earlier remarks by President Trump and Elon Musk suggesting the crew had been “abandoned” in space by the Biden administration. In a recent orbital news conference, Wilmore acknowledged the political discourse surrounding the issue but emphasized that the crew was prepared for an extended stay and that such contingencies are common in human spaceflight.

The crew, originally expected to remain in space for about eight days after launching aboard the Boeing Starliner on June 5, 2024, faced propulsion issues that delayed their return. NASA ultimately decided to bring the Starliner back without its crew in September 2024, due to safety concerns. To manage the station’s crew rotation, NASA adjusted the schedule and extended the SpaceX Crew 9 mission, which was initially slated to end in March, to late March.

Despite claims from Trump and Musk that the crew had been abandoned by the current administration, Wilmore and pilot Sunita Williams maintained they did not feel stranded, and Wilmore acknowledged Musk’s comment that he had offered to bring the crew back earlier. However, Wilmore clarified that the crew had no knowledge of such an offer.

Regarding the future of the International Space Station (ISS), Elon Musk has voiced his opinion that it should be deorbited in the near future, suggesting that it has served its purpose and has limited incremental value going forward. Musk’s remarks reflected his broader vision for space exploration, which includes focusing more resources on missions to Mars and other destinations in the solar system. He recommended the ISS be deorbited within the next two years, arguing that continued operation of the station would no longer be as beneficial as redirecting efforts toward advancing humanity’s presence on other planets.
