Sony Offers Free PlayStation Plus Extension Sony announced on Sunday that all PlayStation Plus subscribers will receive a five-day service extension following a global outage that disrupted the PlayStation Network (PSN) for approximately 18 hours between Friday and Saturday.

In a post on X, the Japanese tech giant confirmed that network services had been fully restored and apologized for the inconvenience, though it did not disclose the cause of the disruption.

The outage, which began late Friday, prevented users from signing in, accessing online multiplayer features, or using the PlayStation Store. By Saturday evening, Sony confirmed that PSN was operational again.

At its peak, the disruption affected nearly 7,939 users in the U.S. and around 7,336 in the U.K., according to outage tracking site Downdetector.com, which compiles reports from various sources, including user submissions.

“PlayStation is back up after being down for an entire day. At least Sony saved millions of gamers’ Sunday after ruining their Saturday,” a user posted on X.

Sony has experienced more severe outages in the past. In 2014, a cyberattack took PSN offline for several days during the holiday season. An even more serious breach in 2011 compromised the personal data of approximately 77 million users, leading to a month-long service shutdown and regulatory scrutiny.

Sony has announced a five-day extension for all PlayStation Plus subscribers following a widespread outage that left gamers unable to access the PlayStation Network (PSN) for nearly 18 hours. By Saturday evening, Sony announced that PSN was fully operational again. As a crucial component of Sony’s gaming ecosystem, the PlayStation Network enables online multiplayer access, digital game purchases, and other subscription-based services for millions of players globally.

This is not the first major PSN disruption. In 2014, a cyberattack caused an extended outage during the holiday season, while a more severe 2011 breach compromised personal data from nearly 77 million users, leading to a month-long shutdown and regulatory scrutiny.

Despite the inconvenience, many players appreciated Sony’s compensation. “PlayStation is back up again after being down for a whole day. At least Sony saved millions of gamers’ Sunday after ruining their Saturday,” one user posted on X.

Sony reassured users that network services are now fully operational and encouraged those still experiencing issues to contact customer support. The five-day PlayStation Plus extension will be automatically applied to eligible accounts in the coming days.
