Noland Arbaugh, the first recipient of Neuralink’s brain chip, has experienced positive outcomes since the implant was placed in January by Elon Musk’s company. When asked about the potential for the chip to be hacked, Arbaugh acknowledged the possibility but downplayed its impact.

He explained that hacking the brain implant would likely only allow access to some brain signals and data being collected by Neuralink, rather than enabling control over humans or turning them into cyborgs.

The chip transmits data digitally to researchers. Arbaugh expressed concerns about potential hacking scenarios, noting that if his computer were connected at the time of a breach, someone could manipulate his mouse cursor and access messages and emails.

Despite these risks, Arbaugh acknowledged the transformative impact of the brain chip on his life. As a 29-year-old quadriplegic, he highlighted newfound independence and improved social connections thanks to the technology. He mentioned using the chip for messaging, Instagram, email replies, fantasy sports, online comic reading, Japanese learning, and even booking a hotel when visiting Neuralink’s headquarters.

Elon Musk, Neuralink’s founder, has ambitious goals for the chip, envisioning its future potential to address conditions like autism and schizophrenia. He believes it will eventually become as commonplace as a “Fitbit in your skull.”
