Muslim Leaders Demand Rejection of Waqf Bill 2024
Opposition to block Waqf Bill
NCP SP Chief Sharad Pawar assured the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) that the opposition will block the Waqf (Amendment) Bill 2024 from being passed in Parliament. Pawar emphasized that the opposition’s commitment to this cause is unwavering and mentioned that NCP MP Suresh Mhatre, also known as Balya Mama, is part of the Joint Parliamentary Committee. He instructed Mhatre to represent the interests and sentiments of the Muslim community effectively in the committee.
AIMPLB delegation opposes Waqf Bill
Earlier, a delegation from the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB), led by General Secretary Ml Fazlur Raheem Mujaddidi, met with Sharad Pawar at his residence to present a memorandum about the proposed Waqf (Amendment) Bill 2024. The delegation called for the bill’s rejection, arguing that it contradicts the Constitution.
They informed Pawar that there has been a persistent false narrative suggesting that any land or property claimed by the Waqf Board automatically becomes its property. In reality, many acres of Waqf land are illegally occupied by others, including Central and state governments, and efforts to reclaim these lands have been ongoing.
The delegation expressed concern that if the bill is passed, it could result in the loss of these lands from Waqf Board control. They also highlighted that the current Waqf Act (1995) provides a multi-tiered judicial system to resolve such disputes.

The delegation also noted that after the Waqf Tribunal, the next steps involve approaching the High Courts and Supreme Court. However, under the proposed amendment, all judicial matters would be transferred to the district collector, who they believe would be unlikely to make decisions against the government.
They also strongly opposed the inclusion of non-Muslim members on the Waqf Board and the Central Waqf Council, as well as the proposal to eliminate the requirement for the CEO to be Muslim. The General Secretary criticized the bill for what they see as attempts to encroach upon Waqf properties and declared that Muslims reject the bill entirely. They urged Pawar to ensure that his party and the India Alliance exert sufficient pressure on the government to withdraw the bill.
