Comparison of Moto G Power 5G with Previous Models and Nord N30
The new Moto G Power 5G is slightly larger and heavier compared to last year’s model and the Nord N30. Its dimensions are 6.58 by 3.01 by 0.33 inches and it weighs 7.09 ounces.
The screen size has been increased to 6.7 inches, matching that of the Nord N30. Both phones offer a resolution of 2400 by 1080 pixels and a refresh rate of up to 120Hz. The display reaches a peak brightness of 500 nits, while the Nord N30 achieves 680 nits. Colors are vivid, and the screen is easily readable even under direct sunlight.
The design features thin bezels and an in-screen hole for the selfie camera.
Review of Motorola Moto G Power 5G’s Vegan Leather Rear Panel
Motorola has chosen to utilize vegan leather instead of plastic for the rear panel of the phone, available in both Midnight Blue and Pale Lilac editions, with the latter being the version I tested.
The design is visually pleasing and remains free from fingerprints, but its textured surface tends to attract dust and hair quite easily.
During testing, I found that my dog’s hair adhered to the back of the phone immediately upon placing it down, and I also noticed crumbs sticking to it after setting it on my kitchen table.
Fortunately, a simple wipe with a paper towel was sufficient to clean the phone, although I would suggest using a case to alleviate this issue. Despite this, the textured surface does enhance grip, and the raised camera module on the back complements the overall aesthetic with its matching vegan leather finish.
Biometric Security and Durability Features of Motorola Moto G Power 5G (2024)
When it comes to security features, you have the option to use the fingerprint scanner integrated into the side-mounted power button or utilize facial recognition via the front camera. Both methods performed well during testing, but facial recognition proved to be faster and more reliable. Similar to many other phones in its price range, such as the Nord N30, the Moto G Power 5G does not have an official IP rating for protection against dust and water.
However, Motorola assures users that the phone is designed to withstand accidental spills, splashes, sweat, and light rain. In contrast, Motorola’s Moto G Play priced at $149.99 (around ₹10,999) comes with an official IP52 rating.
Performance and Gaming Experience of Motorola Moto G Power 5G (2024)
The Moto G Power 5G is equipped with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, expandable up to 1TB with a microSD card slot. It runs on a MediaTek Dimensity 7020 processor, an improvement over the previous model’s Dimensity 930. During testing, the phone handled multiple open apps smoothly.
Benchmark tests confirm its capable performance. On the Geekbench 6 CPU test, the phone scored 889 in the single-core test and 2,345 in the multi-core test, surpassing last year’s model. In comparison, the Nord N30, powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 695 processor, scored lower at 688 and 2,044 on the same tests. The Google Pixel 7a, featuring the Tensor G2 chip, achieved higher scores at 1,343 and 2,853, albeit at a higher price.
However, the Moto G Power 5G didn’t perform as well as the Nord N30 on the GFXBench Aztec Ruins gaming test, reaching 7.2fps compared to the Nord N30’s 7.8fps. Nevertheless, it handled games like Genshin Impact with minimal stuttering, and while the phone warmed up slightly after prolonged gaming sessions, it remained cool during less demanding tasks.
Battery Life and Charging Capabilities of Motorola Moto G Power 5G (2024)
To assess the Moto G Power’s 5,000mAh battery capacity, I conducted a test by continuously playing a 1080p video over Wi-Fi with the screen set to maximum brightness.
The phone lasted for 12 hours and 15 minutes under these conditions, outlasting the Nord N30, which has the same battery capacity but ran for 11 hours and 18 minutes. In comparison, the Google Pixel 7a, with its smaller 4,355mAh battery, lasted an impressive 13 hours and 25 minutes. The Moto G Power supports 30W fast wired charging, an improvement over the Pixel 7a’s 18W charging.
While the Nord N30 supports 50W wired charging, the Moto G Power stands out with its support for wireless charging at up to 15W, a feature absent in the Nord N30. During testing, it took 1 hour and 58 minutes to fully recharge the Moto G Power using a fast wired charger, whereas the Nord N30 achieved the same in just 55 minutes, albeit without wireless charging support.
Connectivity Features and Performance of Motorola Moto G Power 5G (2024)
The Moto G Power 5G supports various sub-6GHz and C-band 5G spectrums, but it doesn’t have access to the fastest mmWave 5G spectrum, similar to the Nord N30. However, unlike the Nord N30, the Moto G Power 5G supports eSIM usage.
In terms of network speeds, the Moto G Power 5G achieved decent results with speeds of 136Mbps down and 57.2Mbps up, comparable to an iPhone 14 Pro. It also supports dual-band Wi-Fi 6, delivering satisfactory download and upload speeds when connected to a compatible router.
During calls, the phone provides clear sound quality and effectively reduces background noise. The earpiece and speakerphone produce loud enough volumes for usage in noisy environments.
For audio output, the phone’s built-in speaker can fill a small room with sound, and it supports Bluetooth 5.3 for wireless headphone or speaker connections. Additionally, it retains the convenience of a 3.5mm headphone jack for wired headphone use.
In a notable improvement from its predecessor, the Moto G Power 5G now includes NFC support for mobile payments.
Camera Features and Performance of Motorola Moto G Power 5G (2024)
The primary camera of the Moto G Power boasts a 50MP f/1.8 sensor with optical image stabilization (OIS), automatically downsizing shots to 12.5MP. Additionally, it features an 8MP f/2.2 ultra-wide camera with a 118-degree field of view, which doubles as a macro camera for close-up shots.
The camera app provides three distance modes: macro mode, 0.5x zoom for wide-angle shots, and 1x zoom for the main camera, defaulting to the main camera upon opening.
However, despite these specifications, the main camera struggles to capture fine details, even in well-lit conditions. Images often appear blurry, with colors appearing overly vibrant and artificial. The wide-angle mode suffers from similar issues, with skies appearing unnaturally blue and pixelation noticeable upon closer inspection.
On the other hand, the selfie camera performs adequately, particularly in decent lighting conditions.
In terms of video capabilities, the main camera can record in full HD at either 60fps or 30fps, producing clips with a similar visual quality to photos.
Overall, if photography is a priority and budget is a concern, the Nord N30 may be a better option. Alternatively, if you can afford it, the Pixel 7a offers superior imaging hardware and software.
Software and Updates of Motorola Moto G Power 5G (2024)
The Moto G Power 5G comes with Android 14 out of the box. Motorola commits to providing just one major Android update for the device, along with three years of security updates. Similarly, OnePlus offers a similar update policy for the Nord N30, although it ships with Android 13 and won’t receive updates beyond Android 14.
In contrast, the Pixel 7a offers better long-term sustainability, as Google guarantees three years of Android OS upgrades and five years of security updates.
The Moto G Power 5G comes with more preinstalled bloatware compared to previous Motorola devices. The default home screen includes Google and Motorola app folders, as well as Shopping, Entertainment, and GamesHub folders with relevant apps and suggestions. Additionally, preinstalled apps like Indeed, TikTok, Booking.com, Facebook, GoodRX, and Walmart are present.
However, users have the option to remove these apps and folders if they wish, although their inclusion from the start may be considered unnecessary.
Review: Motorola Moto G Power 5G (2024) – A Budget-Friendly Powerhouse
At the price $300 (around ₹22,000), the 2024 Moto G Power 5G stands out as a remarkable option, offering smooth performance, a spacious screen, dependable connectivity, long-lasting battery life, and NFC capabilities.
While the OnePlus Nord N30 boasts a superior camera, the Moto G Power outshines it with its faster performance, extended battery endurance, and support for wireless charging.
These features tilt the balance in favor of the Moto G Power, earning it our Editors’ Choice accolade for budget-friendly Android smartphones. However, if photography is your priority and you’re willing to stretch your budget, the Pixel 7a serves as an excellent upgrade alternative.
