Maruti Suzuki Enters EV Market with Cautious Strategy – e Vitara Unveiled
Maruti Suzuki Takes a Cautious Approach to EVs with the e Vitara
Maruti Suzuki has officially entered the electric vehicle segment with the introduction of the e Vitara, unveiled at the 2025 Bharat Mobility Expo. Expected to launch by the end of this financial year, the e Vitara will be sold through the Nexa dealership network. We explored the car in detail during its unveiling and have exclusive insights on its variants and features below.
A Strategic and Cautious Entry
Despite the significance of this launch, Maruti is treading carefully in the EV space. In an exclusive interaction with Toshihiro Suzuki, President of Suzuki Motor Corporation, ahead of the e Vitara’s debut, he candidly shared the company’s EV strategy for India. Maruti is adopting a top-down approach, prioritizing the e Vitara’s market performance before expanding its EV lineup.
He suggested that while Maruti is well-known for its affordable and budget-friendly models, introducing a lower-cost EV would be a decision influenced by the e Vitara’s reception in the market. This approach differs from Maruti’s usual strategy, where it has traditionally established itself in entry-level segments before moving up. However, this shift is reflective of India’s evolving automobile market, which has transformed significantly since Maruti began operations over four decades ago.
In addition to EVs, Maruti remains committed to a multi-powertrain strategy, offering petrol, CNG, hybrid, and CBG (compressed biogas) options alongside electric models. Nearly every Maruti model—except the Invicto—is available with a CNG variant, and the company also showcased a CBG-powered Brezza at the 2024 Bharat Mobility Expo. Moreover, a flex-fuel petrol range is expected to debut next year.
More Than Just an EV
The e Vitara is a milestone for Maruti, not just as its first electric vehicle but also as the first to introduce Level 2 ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) and a fully digital instrument cluster. While rivals have already launched these features, Maruti has yet to integrate them across its lineup. However, the introduction of the e Vitara is expected to pave the way for ADAS features in future Maruti models, starting from the higher-end variants.
Future EV Lineup
Suzuki has previously hinted at six electrified models planned for release by 2030. While details remain limited, teaser images suggest these may include three models for the Japanese market and three for India, such as the Fronx EV, Wagon R EV, and the newly unveiled e Vitara. India is also set to become a key EV production hub, with these models rolling out from Maruti’s Gujarat manufacturing facility.
e Vitara Overview
The Maruti e Vitara will be available in three variants, offering a choice of two battery packs and a palette of ten color options. It is set to compete with models like the Tata Curvv EV, MG ZS EV, Hyundai Creta Electric, Kia Carens Electric, Mahindra BE 6, and its Toyota counterpart, expected to be named the Urban Cruiser Electric.
