US State Dept. Report: Israel, Human Rights, Gaza
– Israel’s Gaza Actions
The US State Department recently issued a report addressing concerns regarding Israel’s use of American weapons in Gaza and its compliance with international law, particularly in relation to human rights. While there have been allegations of violations, the report acknowledges the challenges of gathering concrete evidence amidst the conflict in Gaza.
Consequently, no definitive conclusions were drawn, and Israel’s assurances to the US regarding human rights were noted as reliable, pending further investigation.
Biden Committee Report: Israel Human Rights
In February, US lawmakers accused Israel of human rights violations, prompting President Joe Biden to establish an investigative committee. This committee was tasked with examining events spanning from October 7 to April. The findings of this report have now been made public.
Israel’s NSM-20 Compliance: Investigation Complicated
The report highlighted that Israel has not fully disclosed information regarding weapons covered under the National Security Memorandum (NSM-20), complicating the investigation process. NSM-20, introduced by the US in February for nations receiving military assistance, requires written assurances regarding the use of American weapons in compliance with international law.
The US evaluates future military aid based on these assurances. Israel’s lack of transparency regarding weapons covered by NSM-20 has hindered the investigation.
US Continues Aid to Israel: Report
The US government may continue sending weapons to Israel. Prior to the US State Department’s report, various organizations, including the United Nations, issued reports alleging human rights violations in Gaza by Israel. However, the official US government report did not provide concrete evidence supporting these claims. Additionally, the report noted that Israel has not halted aid shipments to Gaza.
According to the report, Israel has not been found in violation of any rules. However, it’s worth noting that the US President had previously stated that military aid to Israel would be halted if it took military action in Rafah. Furthermore, there have been instances of intercepted US bomb shipments.
Palestine’s UN Membership: Recent Developments
Palestine has met the criteria for becoming a member of the United Nations, as evidenced by a recent vote held on May 10. The proposal for Palestine’s membership was initiated at the request of Arab nations and received support from India, among others.
Out of the 193 UN member states, 143 voted in favor of Palestine’s membership, while 9 voted against it. Notable dissenting voters include the US and Israel, with 25 countries abstaining from the vote. While this vote does not grant immediate UN membership to Palestine, it signifies their eligibility for membership.
Earlier, on April 18, the United States exercised its veto power to block a proposal granting full UN membership to Palestine in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). The proposal, presented by Algeria, was unable to proceed due to the US veto, preventing Palestine from attaining permanent UN membership status.
