Anthropic, an AI startup rivaling OpenAI, has appointed Instagram co-founder Mike Krieger as its chief product officer. Krieger will oversee product development to expand the reach of Anthropic’s AI chatbot, Claude, including a business version launched this month. This move comes after Krieger’s previous AI startup, Artifact, was sold to Yahoo due to lack of market opportunity.

Anthropic, an AI startup, has named Instagram co-founder Mike Krieger as its chief product officer, aiming to enhance its AI products and stay ahead of competitors, the company announced on Wednesday. Krieger will manage product engineering, management, and design, and will work on expanding the reach of Anthropic’s AI chatbot, Claude.

Anthropic, a rival to OpenAI, has secured significant investment from major backers including Amazon.com and Alphabet, as tech giants strive to compete with Microsoft-supported ChatGPT. In March, Anthropic introduced Claude 3, a suite of AI models claimed to surpass competitors like OpenAI’s GPT-4 and Google’s Gemini 1.0 Ultra in various benchmark tests.

“Mike’s experience in creating intuitive products and user experiences will be critical as we develop new ways for people to interact with Claude, especially in workplace settings,” said Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei in a statement. Earlier this month, Anthropic launched a business version of Claude 3, priced at $30 per user per month, to attract corporate clients.

Meanwhile, Krieger sold his AI-driven news platform, Artifact, to Yahoo last month, citing insufficient market opportunity to justify further investment. Krieger had stepped down as the chief technical officer of Instagram, owned by Meta, in 2018 without providing much explanation for his departure.
