IMD Weather Alert: 3 Shocking Storm Warnings That Could Disrupt Life Across 8 States

North India’s recent dust storms and rainfall brought temporary relief from intense heat, with Delhi-NCR and neighboring states witnessing a 3–5°C temperature drop. However, the IMD has issued a three-day alert for severe thunderstorms, hail, and high-speed winds across eight states—Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, and Vidarbha—warning of crop damage, uprooted infrastructure, and power disruptions. While the storms quell heatwaves, their ferocity risks lightning strikes, reduced visibility, and structural harm, particularly in eastern regions. Northern areas, including Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan, face continued storms until May 6, with dust clouds complicating travel.

Meanwhile, southern states like Karnataka and Kerala brace for week-long rain, raising urban flooding concerns. The IMD urges farmers to safeguard harvests and advises citizens to avoid open areas, secure loose objects, and heed real-time updates. This turbulent weather, fueled by shifting pre-monsoon systems, underscores the growing unpredictability of climate patterns and their cascading impacts on daily life.

IMD Weather Alert: 3 Shocking Storm Warnings That Could Disrupt Life Across 8 States

Following days of sweltering heat, northern India, including Delhi-NCR, breathed a sigh of relief as dust storms and rainfall brought cooler temperatures over the weekend. However, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has urged residents across eight states to remain vigilant, issuing a three-day weather alert for thunderstorms, hail, and gusty winds until May 6.

Key Regions Under Watch

The IMD’s advisory highlights heightened risks for eastern Rajasthan, western/eastern Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Odisha, Bihar, and West Bengal. These areas could face localized storms with wind speeds exceeding 50–60 km/h, hail, and lightning, potentially disrupting daily life and agriculture.

In the northwest, including Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and Rajasthan, lightning and dust storms (particularly in Rajasthan until May 5) may reduce visibility, posing challenges for commuters and outdoor workers. Meanwhile, southern states like Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry are under a seven-day alert for thunderstorms and heavy rain, signaling a widespread pattern of unstable weather.

Behind the Weather Shift

Meteorologists attribute these conditions to pre-monsoon activity, typical for early May. Clashes between moist easterly winds and dry, hot westerlies create ideal conditions for thunderstorms, particularly in central and eastern India. While these storms offer temporary heat relief, their intensity raises concerns.

Impacts Beyond the Forecast

The recent storms have already left a mark:

  • Uprooted trees, banners, and hoardings caused power outages in multiple districts.
  • Farmers face a dual challenge—rain aids crops but hail threatens harvest-ready yields.
  • Urban areas grapple with waterlogging and traffic snarls, while flight delays loom as dust storms reduce visibility.

Proactive Measures Advised

The IMD emphasizes caution:

  • Farmers: Secure harvests and livestock; delay work during alerts.
  • Travelers: Check weather updates, avoid highways during dust storms.
  • Residents: Stay indoors during lightning, secure loose objects, and prepare for power backups.

Looking Ahead

While the storms break the heat, their frequency and severity this year underscore the need for adaptive measures. Authorities recommend monitoring IMD updates via their app or website. As climate patterns grow more unpredictable, such alerts serve as a critical tool for safeguarding lives and livelihoods.
