According to IMD scientist Soma Sen, East India has been facing an unusually prolonged period of severe heatwaves. She noted that there may be a slight decrease in temperatures starting from May 5 due to increased moisture.
The IMD attributed the severe heatwave conditions to a decrease in the frequency of thunderstorms in East and Northeast India.
IMD chief Mrutyunjay Mohapatra stated that the prolonged heatwave in East and South Peninsular India during April was a result of the absence of thunderstorms and the presence of a persistent anticyclone.
The weather department indicated that starting from May 4, South Peninsular India would experience thunderstorm activity, with states like Telangana, Maharashtra, and Madhya Pradesh also expecting thunderstorms.
