Heavy rain and snowfall caused major travel disruptions in Himachal Pradesh on Saturday. Over 100 roads were blocked, including three important national highways, according to the state’s emergency response center.

The breakdown of the road closures is as follows: Lahaul and Spiti are the most affected, with a whopping 99 roads shut down. Kullu has 3 blocked roads, while Chamba and Kangra each have one.

Adding to the woes of heavy rain in Kangra, Himachal Pradesh, a bridge was completely destroyed. Thankfully, officials say a replacement bridge should be built by the end of April.

Be aware! The India Meteorological Department warns of scattered thunderstorms with lightning in some areas of Himachal Pradesh on Tuesday and Wednesday (April 22nd and 23rd). This yellow alert signifies potentially dangerous weather conditions that could last for a few days and disrupt daily activities.

There’s good news for rain in India! The India Meteorological Department (IMD) is forecasting an above-average amount of rainfall across the country during the upcoming monsoon season.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts a wetter than usual monsoon season for India. Rainfall is expected to be above normal from June to September. IMD forecasts suggest rainfall could be as much as 106% of the long-term average (LPA) which is 87 cm for the period 1971-2020. This means many parts of India can expect to see more rain than usual during the monsoon.

While the India Meteorological Department (IMD) made their announcement about a strong monsoon, there’s also a factor to consider. Right now, there are moderate El Nino conditions in the Pacific Ocean. El Nino can sometimes weaken monsoons, but that might not be the case this year. Climate models predict El Nino could actually weaken to a neutral state by the early part of the monsoon season, potentially allowing for the full impact of the above-average rainfall to occur.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) highlighted an interesting tidbit in a recent press release. For the past three months (January to March 2024), the amount of snow covering the Northern Hemisphere has been less than usual. The IMD suggests this difference in snow cover could potentially affect upcoming weather patterns, including the monsoon season.
