Google Search Transformed: AI Summaries Here to Stay (But Can You Trust Them?)
Google is expanding its Gemini language model from a chatbot into a full AI assistant integrated across its apps and services. At Google I/O, Amar Subramanya highlighted Gemini’s advanced reasoning and deeper ecosystem integration. A key update is the introduction of AI Overviews in Google Search, powered by the Gemini model. These AI-generated summaries appear above traditional search results, replacing the previous Search Generative Experience, which was optional.
AI Overviews are now a default feature, rolling out in the U.S. with global expansion planned by the end of the year. While users cannot disable AI Overviews, they can refine their results by selecting the “Web” option. Google claims this feature increases clicks on cited sources, though concerns remain about proper attribution. Liz Reid, Google’s VP of Search, stated that AI Overviews drive more traffic to linked pages. To improve accuracy, Google has introduced verification tools like Google Double-check. As Gemini evolves, it marks a significant shift in Google’s approach to AI-powered search and digital assistance.

One of the most noticeable changes for users is the introduction of AI-generated summaries in search results. Google has begun rolling out AI Overviews, a feature powered by the Gemini model that presents AI-generated answers at the top of search pages. Unlike the previous Search Generative Experience, which was optional, AI Overviews are now a default feature. This rollout has started in the U.S. and will expand globally by the end of the year.
Adjusting Search Results
While AI Overviews cannot be disabled, users can refine their results to resemble traditional search pages by selecting the “Web” option under the “More” tab.
