Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has urged the Central government to allocate ₹700 crore for water augmentation projects and an additional ₹300 crore for the decennial exposition of St. Francis Xavier’s relics, set to take place later this year. He presented these funding requests during a pre-budget meeting chaired by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in Delhi, where he highlighted Goa’s financial needs and the significance of these projects for the state’s development. Sawant also emphasized the necessity of timely support from the Central government to ensure the smooth execution of these initiatives, benefiting residents, tourists, and the local economy.

He stressed that delays in funding could hinder progress, affecting essential services, infrastructure, and economic opportunities. By securing adequate financial assistance, Goa can effectively implement these projects, enhance public utilities, attract more visitors, and create sustainable growth, ultimately strengthening the state’s long-term economic and social development.

Highlighting the significance of these initiatives, Sawant stressed their role in Goa’s overall development. The relics of St. Francis Xavier, housed at the Basilica of Bom Jesus in Old Goa near Panaji, will be on display during the exposition, which is scheduled to run from November 21, 2024, to January 5, 2025.

This globally attended event is held once every ten years, attracting thousands of pilgrims, tourists, and dignitaries from around the world. The exposition of St. Francis Xavier’s relics holds immense religious, historical, and cultural significance, drawing devotees who seek blessings and pay homage. It also provides a significant boost to the local economy, as businesses, hospitality, and tourism sectors witness increased activity, reinforcing Goa’s status as a major spiritual and cultural destination.

In addition to these requests, Sawant also sought financial support for the Konkan Railway to enhance connectivity and promote economic growth in Goa. As the state’s finance minister, he expressed optimism that these proposals would be considered in the Union Budget for 2024-2025. His visit to Delhi included participation in both the pre-budget meeting and the GST Council meeting, where he engaged in discussions on financial policies, taxation reforms, and budgetary allocations. Sawant also interacted with key policymakers to advocate for Goa’s developmental needs, emphasizing the importance of Central support in enhancing the state’s infrastructure and economic growth.

During these meetings, Sawant engaged in discussions on key financial matters affecting Goa and emphasized the need for enhanced infrastructure and economic opportunities in the state. He highlighted the importance of government support in ensuring the timely execution of water projects and transportation improvements, which are vital for Goa’s long-term growth.

Additionally, he underscored the economic and cultural significance of the St. Francis Xavier exposition, which attracts pilgrims and tourists from around the world, boosting the local economy. Sawant reaffirmed his commitment to securing adequate funding for these crucial initiatives to accelerate Goa’s progress. He emphasized that these projects would not only improve the state’s infrastructure but also boost tourism, create employment opportunities, and enhance the overall quality of life for residents. He assured that his government would work closely with the Centre to ensure the timely implementation of these initiatives, reinforcing Goa’s position as a key economic and cultural hub.
