A fire erupted at Lahore’s Allama Iqbal International Airport on Thursday, reportedly sparked by a short circuit in the ceiling above the immigration counter. The incident led to delays in both Hajj and international flights, as reported by various media sources. Prompt response from rescue teams prevented any loss of life, with authorities confirming that the short circuit occurred at approximately 5 am, according to Pakistan’s Aaj News.

Geo News stated that a fire broke out around 5:23 am, caused by a short circuit in the ceiling of the immigration counter. Rescue teams successfully put out the fire by 8 am. Videos circulating on social media showed smoke around the airport.

Several Pakistani news outlets mentioned that the immigration system suffered partial damage, leading to the temporary suspension of immigration procedures.

Despite concerns over immigration processes, inbound international flights continued to land at Lahore airport without diversion. Passengers affected by the incident were evacuated from the immigration lounge due to smoke, prompting operations to temporarily shift to the domestic lounge, as per confirmation from the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) to Aaj News.

Moreover, the fire resulted in delays to numerous Hajj and international flights. The CAA provided reassurance that international flight operations were ongoing from the domestic departure lounge, accommodating both Hajj and international flights through domestic facilities.

The Pakistani Ministry of Religious Affairs announced its plan to commence the Hajj 2024 flight operation on May 9, lasting until June 9, as reported by The News International.

Initially, 11 special flights were scheduled to transport a total of 2,160 Hajj pilgrims to Saudi Arabia.

These flights aimed to accommodate passengers from various cities, with Lahore contributing 670 passengers through three flights, Karachi 330 passengers through two flights, Islamabad 680 passengers through three flights, Multan 329 passengers through two flights, and Sialkot 151 passengers through a single flight.
