ED probes Ghosh properties for illegal gains
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has been investigating at least seven properties owned by Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, and his wife, which are suspected to have been acquired with proceeds from illegal activities. The agency, which is examining alleged financial misconduct at the hospital—especially in light of recent high-profile incidents including a doctor being raped and murdered there—discovered documents related to these properties during searches conducted last week. These searches took place at the homes of Ghosh, his relatives, and associates across various locations including Kolkata.
ED finds property links to illegal gains
The ED stated that during their search operations, they discovered documents pertaining to several properties owned by Ghosh and his wife Sangeeta. These included one flat in Murshidabad, three flats and two houses in Kolkata, and documents related to a farmhouse they own. In addition, incriminating documents and digital devices belonging to Dr. Sandip Ghosh were seized. The documents related to the properties were confiscated based on preliminary suspicions that they were purchased using illicit funds.
ED questions wife’s property acquisitions
According to the ED, Sangeeta Ghosh, who served as an assistant professor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital during Sandip Ghosh’s tenure as principal, acquired two immovable properties without state government approval. Although she received retroactive approval in 2021, the agency noted this discrepancy.
Sangeeta Ghosh defended her husband, asserting that the accusations against him were baseless. “These are all wild allegations. Please do not condemn a person before he is proven guilty,” she said during the search of their residence last week.
Sandip Ghosh faces allegations of misusing dead bodies for research, selling biomedical waste, and favoring certain firms without issuing proper tenders. On August 23, the Calcutta High Court instructed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to investigate the alleged financial misconduct at RG Kar College and Hospital during Ghosh’s three-year term as principal.
The CBI filed a case against Ghosh and three companies the day after the Calcutta High Court’s directive. Following almost 15 days of questioning, the CBI arrested Ghosh, his bodyguard, and two vendors earlier this month, and also administered a polygraph test to Ghosh.
Last month, the ED charged Ghosh under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act.
