Cyclone Shakti Hoax: IMD Drops Truth Bomb in Urgent Alert—5 Key Facts You Must Know!

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has denied rumors about the formation of “Cyclone Shakti” over the Bay of Bengal, confirming no such cyclone has been forecasted. While the southwest monsoon has advanced into parts of the Andaman Sea, Nicobar Islands, and southern Bay of Bengal, the IMD clarified that an upper-air cyclonic circulation in the region does not indicate a developing storm.

The monsoon is expected to progress further into the Arabian Sea, Maldives, and Andaman & Nicobar Islands by May 16-17. Meanwhile, heavy rainfall is predicted for Northeast India, while South India may see isolated showers. Heatwave conditions are likely in Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan. The IMD urges the public to rely only on official updates and dismisses unverified reports. Residents in affected areas should stay prepared for rain or extreme heat, depending on their location. For accurate weather alerts, the IMD’s official channels remain the most reliable source.

Cyclone Shakti Hoax: IMD Drops Truth Bomb in Urgent Alert—5 Key Facts You Must Know!

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has dismissed recent speculation about the formation of “Cyclone Shakti” over the Bay of Bengal, calling such reports unfounded. In an official statement, the IMD confirmed that no cyclonic activity has been forecasted for the region at this time.

Monsoon Advances, But No Cyclone Threat

While the IMD has announced the onset of the southwest monsoon in parts of the Andaman Sea, Nicobar Islands, and the southern Bay of Bengal, it clarified that an upper-air cyclonic circulation observed over the Bay does not indicate cyclone formation.

“We have not predicted any cyclone,” a senior IMD scientist told NDTV, urging the public to rely only on official updates.

Monsoon Progress and Weather Forecast

The IMD expects the monsoon to advance further into the south Arabian Sea, Maldives, Comorin area, and the entire Andaman and Nicobar Islands by May 16-17. Meanwhile, several regions across India are likely to experience significant rainfall:

  • Northeast India: Fairly widespread moderate rainfall until May 17.
  • South India (Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, etc.): Isolated moderate rainfall expected.
  • Andaman & Nicobar Islands: Isolated heavy rainfall likely until May 16.
  • East & Central India (West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh): Scattered rainfall predicted.

Heat Wave Alerts

While some regions brace for rain, others face intense heat:

  • Gangetic West Bengal & Jharkhand: Heat wave conditions likely on May 14-15.
  • Uttar Pradesh: Extreme heat expected until May 19.
  • West Rajasthan: High temperatures forecast from May 15-17.

Why the Confusion?

Rumors about Cyclone Shakti may have stemmed from misinterpretations of weather models or unofficial sources. The IMD emphasizes that only its official bulletins should be trusted for accurate forecasts.

What Should You Do?

  • Stay updated via IMD’s official website or verified news sources.
  • Prepare for rain if in monsoon-affected areas.
  • Take heat precautions where warnings are issued.

While monsoon progress brings relief to some, other regions must stay vigilant against heat waves. As for Cyclone Shakti, the IMD’s clarification puts speculation to rest—no such storm is on the horizon.
