BW LPG Limited, a leading player in the liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) shipping industry, has agreed to sell two of its Very Large Gas Carriers (VLGCs) to its Indian subsidiary, BW LPG India, for a total of $150 million. The two vessels, BW Pampero and BW Chinook, were recently acquired as part of BW LPG’s purchase of Avance Gas. Each ship is priced at approximately $75 million, with the transfer expected to be completed in the third quarter of 2025.

Strengthening India’s LPG Market

BW LPG India already operates the largest VLGC fleet in India, and this acquisition will further solidify its market position. The addition of these two modern, 2015-built ships will not only expand the fleet but also enhance its efficiency to meet India’s rising demand for LPG. This move aligns with the country’s growing reliance on LPG imports for both domestic and industrial use.

All of BW LPG India’s vessels are registered under the Indian flag and operated locally, making the company a key contributor to India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India) initiative. It plays a crucial role in the nation’s energy supply chain, handling around 20% of India’s total LPG imports.

A Strategic Partnership

BW LPG India was established in 2017 as a joint venture between BW LPG Limited and Global United Shipping. In 2021, Maas Capital Shipping B.V. acquired a 42% stake in the company, while BW LPG retained a majority 52% ownership. This partnership has been instrumental in strengthening India’s LPG shipping infrastructure.

Kristian Sørensen, CEO of BW LPG, emphasized that this transaction reinforces the company’s presence in India while ensuring a more modern and efficient fleet. He also acknowledged the strong collaboration with Maas Capital and Global United Shipping, which has played a crucial role in supporting BW LPG India’s growth.

Optimizing the Fleet for Future Growth

This sale is part of BW LPG’s broader strategy to streamline its fleet and focus on high-growth markets like India. By transferring these vessels to its Indian subsidiary, the company aims to better serve the region’s increasing energy needs while maintaining operational efficiency.

BW LPG remains committed to supporting India’s energy transition, ensuring a stable supply of LPG as the country continues to expand its gas-based economy. The company’s efforts align with global trends toward cleaner energy solutions while maintaining a strong presence in traditional fuel transportation.
