State-owned telecom operator Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has recorded a net profit of ₹262 crore for the December quarter, marking its first profitable quarter since 2007. Union Minister for Communications Jyotiraditya Scindia described this achievement as a “significant turning point,” crediting the company’s revival to service expansion, cost optimization, and a growing subscriber base.
Growth Across Services
BSNL reported a 14-18% revenue increase across its mobility, Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH), and leased line services compared to the same period last year. The telecom provider’s subscriber base also expanded from 8.4 crore in June to 9 crore by December.
“BSNL has, in the third quarter of FY2024-25, posted a quarterly profit for the first time since 2007,” said Scindia.
Additionally, BSNL significantly reduced its finance costs and overall expenditure, leading to a decline in losses by over ₹1,800 crore year-over-year. Its EBITDA has doubled over the last four years, reaching ₹2,100 crore in FY24.
Strategic Initiatives & 4G Rollout
To enhance customer experience, BSNL has introduced new services such as National WiFi Roaming, BiTV (free entertainment for mobile users), IFTV (for FTTH customers), and India’s first private 5G connectivity for the mining sector.
The company is also prioritizing its nationwide 4G deployment. “Out of 1,00,000 planned towers, 75,000 have been installed, with nearly 60,000 already commissioned. We aim to have all towers fully operational by June this year,” Scindia stated.
With steady revenue growth and disciplined cost management, BSNL is focused on maintaining profitability and strengthening its position in India’s telecom industry.
