Prime Minister Narendra Modi warmly welcomed Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Deputy Prime Minister of the UAE, during his inaugural official visit to India in his current role. The high-profile meeting, held in New Delhi, underscored efforts to elevate the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between India and the UAE, spanning critical areas such as trade, defence, energy, technology, education, and cultural collaboration.
In a heartfelt social media message, PM Modi highlighted Dubai’s pivotal role in advancing bilateral relations, describing the Crown Prince’s visit as a testament to the enduring friendship between the two nations. He extended warm regards to UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, recalling his own visit to the UAE in 2023. During that trip, PM Modi attended the World Government Summit in Dubai as the guest of honour, further cementing diplomatic ties. The Prime Minister also expressed gratitude to the UAE leadership for their continued support and care toward the 4.3 million-strong Indian community residing there, acknowledging their contributions to the UAE’s growth.
Strengthening Ties Across Sectors
The discussions between PM Modi and Sheikh Hamdan emphasized enhancing economic collaboration, with both leaders exploring avenues to boost trade and investment. The UAE is India’s third-largest trade partner, with bilateral trade exceeding $85 billion in 2023–24. Efforts to expand cooperation in renewable energy, particularly solar and green hydrogen projects, were also a focal point, aligning with both nations’ sustainability goals.
Defence and security cooperation featured prominently, reflecting shared interests in regional stability. The leaders discussed joint ventures in defence manufacturing, technology sharing, and counterterrorism strategies. Additionally, advancements in digital infrastructure, artificial intelligence, and startups were covered, with India’s thriving tech ecosystem offering opportunities for UAE investors.
Diplomatic Engagements with Indian Leadership
Earlier in the day, Sheikh Hamdan held separate meetings with External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. Dr. Jaishankar praised the Crown Prince’s optimistic outlook on the evolving India-UAE partnership, emphasizing mutual trust and shared aspirations. Defence Minister Singh described their dialogue as “highly productive,” noting a shared commitment to deepen collaboration in defence innovation and technology. He reiterated both nations’ resolve to promote peace and prosperity in the region, reflecting their aligned strategic interests.
Sheikh Hamdan’s delegation, which included UAE ministers, senior officials, and business leaders, was received at Delhi’s airport by Minister of State Suresh Gopi, underlining the importance India places on the visit.
Mumbai Leg: Boosting Business Collaboration
Following his engagements in Delhi, the Crown Prince travelled to Mumbai for a business roundtable with top Indian CEOs and UAE business representatives. The session aimed to foster partnerships in traditional sectors like logistics, healthcare, and tourism, as well as emerging fields such as fintech, smart cities, and sustainable energy. Industry leaders from both sides explored joint ventures, ease of doing business reforms, and strategies to leverage India’s skilled workforce alongside the UAE’s strategic global connectivity.
The Mumbai visit also highlighted opportunities in education and skill development, with discussions on establishing UAE-funded research centres and specialized training programs in India. Cultural ties were another key theme, with plans to organize cross-border festivals, art exhibitions, and sports exchanges to strengthen people-to-people connections.
A Relationship Rooted in Shared Vision
The Crown Prince’s visit marks another milestone in the rapidly growing India-UAE alliance, which has flourished since the 2015 Comprehensive Strategic Partnership agreement. Recent milestones include a landmark free trade pact (CEPA) in 2022, which boosted bilateral trade by 15%, and the UAE’s $75 billion investment pledge in Indian infrastructure.
Both nations also collaborate on global platforms, advocating for inclusive growth, climate action, and multilateral reforms. The UAE’s support for India’s G20 presidency and joint initiatives like the I2U2 Group (India, Israel, UAE, USA) underscore their aligned geopolitical priorities.
As Sheikh Hamdan concluded his visit, the focus remained on translating discussions into actionable outcomes, with both governments pledging to fast-track joint projects. For India, the UAE remains a vital partner in its economic growth and regional diplomacy, while the UAE views India as a key ally in diversifying its economy and enhancing global influence.
The visit not only reinforced existing bonds but also set the stage for a future-oriented partnership, driven by innovation, mutual respect, and a shared vision for a prosperous and stable world.
