Aussie frozen for future revival

Southern Cryonics, the first cryonics facility in the Southern Hemisphere, has recently announced the cryogenic freezing of its inaugural client at its Holbrook location in Australia. The client, an octogenarian who passed away in Sydney, has been preserved at minus 200 degrees Celsius, marking the beginning of what the company calls ‘Patient One.’ Facility manager Philip Rhoades described the process as quite stressful, noting the meticulous preparation required to ensure its success and the anticipation of potential complications.

First client surprised cryonics team

Mr. Rhoades mentioned that while his company had been gearing up to accept bodies starting this year, their first client came as a bit of a surprise. He noted that they had anticipated other existing members to be potential candidates for the first cryopreservation, but it turned out to be someone outside of their membership. The family of the deceased reached out unexpectedly, giving the team about a week to prepare.

Despite having tested their cryonics equipment and made necessary arrangements beforehand, Mr. Rhoades emphasized that the actual process of handling a real case still presented unique challenges.

Aussie frozen for future life

Southern Cryonics, the pioneering cryonics facility in the Southern Hemisphere, has successfully cryogenically frozen its inaugural client, referred to as ‘Patient One’, in hopes of eventual revival. The individual, a man in his 80s, passed away on May 12 at a Sydney hospital. The process began immediately after his death, spanning approximately 10 hours. Initially, his body was cooled to around 6 degrees Celsius using ice in the hospital’s cold room.

Doctors then administered a special liquid to preserve cells and lower his body temperature further. Subsequently, he was wrapped in a specialized sleeping bag and packed in dry ice, reducing his temperature to approximately minus 80 degrees Celsius. The following day, he was transported to Southern Cryonics’ Holbrook facility, where his temperature was further lowered to minus 200 degrees Celsius upon the arrival of liquid nitrogen.

Finally, he was placed in a vacuum storage pod within a special tank for long-term preservation. This significant milestone marks the beginning of Southern Cryonics’ mission to potentially revive individuals in the future.

According to the report, the entire cryopreservation procedure cost the client $170,000, which includes additional charges for medical teams involved in the preservation process. The 10-hour procedure aims to enhance the chances of eventual revival, as stated by the company. It’s worth noting that Southern Cryonics‘ Holbrook facility currently possesses one dewar capable of accommodating four bodies. However, the site has the capacity for up to 40 bodies, with potential for expansion, a necessity the company anticipates in the near future.
