AT&T Breach Exposes Calls & Texts of Millions
Recently, AT&T disclosed that almost all call and text message records from mid to late 2022 were exposed, affecting tens of millions of its cellphone customers and others on its network. The compromised data includes phone numbers of nearly all its cellular customers and those using its network, covering May 1 to October 31, 2022. The exposed logs include details on whom customers called or texted, frequency of interactions, and call durations, but not the contents or specific times of communications.
AT&T data breach: calls & texts exposed
AT&T recently revealed that a “very small number” of customers’ records from January 2, 2023, were also compromised in addition to the previously mentioned period from mid to late 2022. The breach, attributed to an “illegal download” from a third-party cloud platform, was discovered in April. This incident occurred concurrently with another data leak AT&T was addressing.
The company assured that the exposed data, which includes details on calls and texts but not their contents or specific times, is not believed to be publicly accessible. International calls were generally unaffected, except those made to Canada.
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has initiated an investigation and is collaborating with law enforcement on the matter. AT&T emphasized that this breach is distinct from an earlier incident in March involving the release of personal information, such as Social Security numbers, of 73 million current and former customers on the dark web. As of the end of 2022, AT&T had approximately 110 million wireless subscribers.
