In-House Design for Efficiency and Cost Savings

Apple’s in-house C1 5G modem has entered mass production, utilizing a combination of TSMC’s 4nm and 7nm process technologies to enhance power efficiency. While Apple briefly introduced the C1 during the iPhone 16e launch, the company did not provide many technical details. However, new information reveals that the baseband chip itself is fabricated on TSMC’s 4nm node, whereas its transceiver is produced using the 7nm process.

Unlike the A18 chip, which powers the iPhone 16e and is built on TSMC’s second-generation 3nm (N3E) process, Apple opted for 4nm and 7nm technologies for the C1, likely to manage production costs. According to Reuters, Johny Srouji, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Hardware Technologies, confirmed that cost efficiency played a role in this decision. By manufacturing the modem in-house, Apple not only gains greater control over its hardware and software but also reduces component costs, contributing to the iPhone 16e’s lower starting price of $599.

Apple claims that the C1 modem delivers superior power efficiency, improving the iPhone 16e’s battery life compared to other 6.1-inch iPhones, including the base iPhone 16. However, one trade-off is that the C1 does not support mmWave technology, which is present in the Snapdragon X71 5G modem used in other iPhone 16 models and enables significantly faster data speeds. Additionally, Apple has not disclosed specific performance benchmarks for the C1, so a clearer assessment of its capabilities will emerge once real-world tests and data become available.

The iPhone 16e is designed for Apple Intelligence, featuring the powerful A18 chip for seamless performance.
