The Pencil Pro doesn’t supplant the second-generation Apple Pencil; instead, it offers slight enhancements and additional features. Notably, it introduces four distinct features that differentiate it from the Apple Pencil 2.
Among these, Find My support is likely the most anticipated, allowing users to locate it via the Find My app on their iPhone or iPad. This functionality seems like a standard expectation but has been a bit delayed in implementation.
Apple Pencil Pro: New Gestures & Haptic
Inside the new Pencil Pro, there’s a built-in haptic engine that provides subtle feedback during interactions, such as when you double-tap to switch tools. Moreover, it introduces two extra gestures: barrel roll and squeeze. Squeeze gesture prompts a new palette for tool, line weight, and color selection, while barrel roll utilizes the gyroscope for precise control over shaped pen and brush tools by rotating the Apple Pencil. Apple mentions the integration of a new sensor to enable these features.
Apple Pencil Pro: Limited Compatibility
The Apple Pencil Pro stands out due to its unique features: Find My, Haptic feedback, Barrel roll, and Squeeze. Interestingly, Apple has limited its compatibility to only a few recently launched iPads: the iPad Pro 2024 (11- and 13-inch) and iPad Air 2024 (11- and 13-inch), released on May 7, 2024.
Unfortunately, it’s not compatible with older models like the iPad Pro 2022 or iPad Air 2022, which may disappoint some users. This decision reflects Apple’s typical approach to product exclusivity.
Consequently, if you own an older iPad, your options remain limited to last year’s entry-level Apple Pencil (USB Type-C) or the Apple Pencil 2 from 2018, which still holds its ground in 2024.
Apple Pencil Pro: Same Price, New Features
The Apple Pencil Pro is priced at Rs 11,900 in India, which is the same as the Apple Pencil 2. It will be accessible for purchase starting May 15.
