With participants, visitors, and delegates arriving from across the country, traffic conditions have worsened, prompting Bengaluru police to issue advisories regarding possible bottlenecks.

Passengers heading to Kempegowda International Airport have been urged to plan their trips in advance to avoid missing their flights. Videos circulating on social media show a five-kilometer-long traffic jam, with several users suggesting alternative commuting options. One user on X warned, “Severe traffic from Yelahanka to IAF, spanning 5KM,” while another advised against taking taxis, recommending public transport instead to reduce congestion.

The Bengaluru Traffic Police also issued an alert, notifying travelers about severe congestion near the BSF Campus, Yelahanka Air Force, and Airport Road. Officials have advised airport-bound commuters to consider alternate routes via Hennur Cross and Bagalur Road to reach the airport’s south gate.

“India is the rising star of global aerospace,” remarked Remi Maillard, Airbus India and South Asia chief. “It is the fastest-growing commercial aviation market in the world—and it will remain so for the next 20 years.”

Boeing, another key participant in the five-day Aero India event, shares a similar outlook. “It’s the most dynamic market on the planet—and certainly the most exciting,” stated Salil Gupte, Boeing India head.

Government data supports this optimism. According to Boeing’s projections, air traffic in South Asia—led by India—is expected to grow at a rate exceeding seven percent annually until 2043. Despite this surge, air travel penetration remains low, with India recording just 0.12 per capita air trips, compared to China’s 0.46.

While trains remain the dominant mode of transport, Boeing estimates that if just two percent of India’s 18 million daily train passengers switched to air travel, the aviation market could double.

Government Initiatives Driving Growth

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has prioritized expanding air travel accessibility since assuming office in 2014. His vision, captured in the slogan “A common man who travels in slippers should also be seen in the aircraft,” led to the 2016 launch of a program aimed at improving connectivity between small towns and major cities.

Over the past decade, India has seen its number of airports grow from 74 in 2014 to 157 in 2024. Government plans aim to increase this figure to between 350 and 400 by 2047, marking 100 years of India’s independence. Additionally, the country is investing heavily in workforce development, targeting the training of 30,000 pilots and an equal number of mechanics over the next two decades, with Airbus and Boeing playing key roles in these efforts, particularly in encouraging female participation.

The Future of International Aviation in India

Industry leaders believe that India’s next major growth phase lies in international air travel. “The kind of revolution we have seen in the Indian domestic market in recent years is now happening in the long-haul segment,” Maillard stated, highlighting India’s strategic location, growing workforce, and strong economy as key advantages.

Boeing anticipates increased demand for larger aircraft suited for long-haul travel, expecting them to constitute 15 percent of India’s fleet within 20 years. The company predicts that the Indian market will require at least 2,835 new aircraft by 2043, with three-quarters of these catering to market expansion and the rest replacing older planes.

For Airbus, India accounted for nearly 10 percent of its global commercial aircraft deliveries last year, with 72 of its 766 aircraft going to Indian carriers. Meanwhile, Boeing, which has faced setbacks due to production concerns and labor strikes, has not disclosed its 2024 figures.

India’s Record-Breaking Aircraft Orders

Though both Airbus and Boeing have remained tight-lipped about their expectations from Aero India 2025, India’s aviation sector continues to place substantial orders.

In 2023, Air India secured a historic deal for 470 aircraft—250 from Airbus and 220 from Boeing—followed by an additional order of 100 Airbus planes last year. IndiGo, the country’s largest low-cost carrier, made history by placing the largest-ever aircraft order, purchasing 500 Airbus planes in 2023, and added another 30 to its fleet in 2024.
