Swedish furniture giant IKEA is expanding into North India, launching online deliveries in Delhi-NCR and nine other cities starting March 1. To support this, the company has set up distribution centers in Gurugram and Farrukhabad for efficient logistics. IKEA plans to open two major stores in Gurgaon (2026) and Noida, along with 5-6 smaller city stores in Delhi. This marks the second phase of its India expansion, following successful launches in Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Bengaluru. IKEA Finally Expands to Delhi-NCR: Online Deliveries Start March 1, Physical Stores Coming Soon!

Swedish furniture giant IKEA is set to expand its operations in North India with the launch of its online delivery services. Starting March 1, the company will introduce e-commerce operations across Delhi-NCR and key cities, including Lucknow, Kanpur, Agra, Prayagraj (Allahabad), Amritsar, Chandigarh, Jaipur, Ludhiana, and Varanasi.

To support this expansion, IKEA has established a distribution center in Gurugram, enabling same-day deliveries within Delhi-NCR. The company continues to emphasize a hybrid omnichannel strategy, prioritizing digital sales before opening physical stores. Currently, over 30% of IKEA’s revenue comes from its online platforms.

With this move, IKEA is reinforcing its presence in India, offering customers access to over 7,000 products through its website and mobile app. In addition to furniture, the brand will provide home furnishing consultations and installation services.

Expanding Beyond Western and Southern India

Until now, IKEA has primarily operated in the Western and Southern regions of India, with stores in Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Bengaluru. The decision to expand into North India marks a major milestone in IKEA’s efforts to build a nationwide presence.

IKEA’s Long-Awaited Entry into Delhi-NCR

Nearly 11 years after establishing itself in India, IKEA is finally making inroads into North India, beginning with online deliveries in Delhi-NCR from March 1.

IKEA India, a subsidiary of the global home furnishings brand, has been carefully strategizing this expansion for years. The company first launched its brick-and-mortar presence in 2018 with a store in Hyderabad, followed by Navi Mumbai (2020), Mumbai (2021), and Bangalore (2022). Despite the significant business potential in Delhi-NCR, the region remained unserved—until now.

In addition to Delhi-NCR, IKEA will cater to nine other major cities in North India, including Agra, Prayagraj, Amritsar, Chandigarh, Jaipur, Kanpur, Lucknow, Ludhiana, and Varanasi. To optimize its supply chain, the company has set up a centralized distribution center in Farrukhabad, Uttar Pradesh, to ensure efficient deliveries across these markets.

Why the Delay?

Although IKEA introduced e-commerce in Mumbai, Maharashtra, and Gujarat in 2019, its expansion into North India took longer. According to IKEA India CEO & CSO Susanne Pulverer, the company took a meticulous approach, dedicating time to research, supply chain infrastructure, and store planning. The establishment of an IKEA store typically takes three to five years due to extensive city-wide surveys, logistical development, and operational execution.

Furthermore, IKEA’s entry into Delhi-NCR marks the start of its second phase of expansion in India. This includes the development of two large-format stores—one in Gurgaon (Gurugram) and another in Noida. The Gurgaon store, set to open in 2026, will span 400,000 sq. ft. and be part of the Ingka Center mall, while the Noida outlet, covering 200,000 sq. ft., will open shortly after.

To further improve accessibility, IKEA also plans to establish 5-6 smaller city-format stores in key areas like South Delhi. Unlike IKEA’s traditional large stores, which cover approximately 400,000 sq. ft., these compact outlets will range between 60,000-100,000 sq. ft., providing a more localized shopping experience.

Strengthening IKEA’s National Expansion

Pulverer emphasized that North India was the missing piece in IKEA’s India strategy. This expansion is expected to build a strong omnichannel presence in the region. Looking ahead, IKEA is targeting further growth in other cities, with Pune expected to be its next destination, followed by Chennai.

This development marks a major step toward IKEA’s long-term vision of establishing a widespread presence in India, bringing its well-known DIY furniture, home solutions, and customer-focused services to more households across the country.

India: A Key Growth Market for IKEA Amid Global Challenges

India has emerged as one of the fastest-growing markets for IKEA, even as the global home furnishings industry experiences a slowdown. The company, which reported revenues exceeding €45 billion in FY24, has demonstrated strong resilience in India despite weak consumer demand worldwide.

“Affordability remains at the core of our strategy. Over the past two years, IKEA India has reduced prices by 16-39%, aligning with our global commitment to making home furnishing accessible. This move ensures that we stay true to our affordability promise,” said Pulverer in an interview with TOI.

In FY24, IKEA significantly lowered prices across 63 markets to drive sales in a challenging home furnishings sector. With a product catalog of 7,000 items, nearly 1,000 are priced under ₹200, making the brand more accessible to budget-conscious customers. “We have recorded nearly 300 million visits across our online and offline channels, with online sales contributing 30% to our business and growing at the fastest rate,” Pulverer added.

North India Expansion: A Strategic Move

On Thursday, IKEA officially announced its expansion into North India, the country’s largest home furnishings market. Starting March 1, the company will launch online delivery services across Delhi-NCR and nine other cities, including Agra, Prayagraj, Amritsar, Chandigarh, Jaipur, Kanpur, Lucknow, Ludhiana, and Varanasi.

Pulverer expressed confidence in India’s long-term growth prospects, stating, “India represents a long-term investment for us. Its market size, rapid growth, and emerging opportunities make it an exciting landscape for IKEA. With just four stores and our expanding online presence, we have only scratched the surface. There’s much more ahead.”

As IKEA continues its journey in India, the company aims to enhance its omnichannel presence and affordability-driven approach, making stylish and functional home furnishings more accessible to Indian consumers.
