YouTube is enhancing its Shorts feature by integrating Google DeepMind’s latest video generation model, Veo 2, into its Dream Screen tool. This update allows users to create AI-generated video clips by simply entering a text prompt, expanding Dream Screen’s capabilities beyond just backgrounds.

Originally launched in September 2023, Dream Screen enabled creators to generate AI-powered backgrounds for their Shorts. With the new Veo 2 integration, users can now generate complete video clips to incorporate into their short-form content, eliminating the need for extensive stock footage searches or additional filming. These AI-generated videos can also be customized with various styles, lens effects, and cinematic elements.

Veo 2 enhances video quality by improving realism, including better physics simulation and human movement accuracy. Additionally, the AI model generates videos faster, helping content creators save time.

To create AI-generated video backgrounds in YouTube Shorts:

  1. Open the YouTube Shorts camera.
  2. Select the ‘Green Screen’ option.
  3. Choose ‘Dream Screen.’
  4. Enter a text prompt for the desired background.
  5. Select the generated image and start recording.

To generate standalone video clips:

  1. Open the Shorts camera.
  2. Tap ‘Add’ to access the media picker.
  3. Tap ‘Create’ at the top.
  4. Enter a text prompt describing the scene.
  5. Choose the style, lens effect, and video length.
  6. Generate the video and insert it into the Short.

To ensure transparency, YouTube applies SynthID watermarks—developed by Google DeepMind—to AI-generated content. These watermarks are invisible to the human eye but can be digitally detected, helping identify AI-generated or modified footage.

Currently, the upgraded Dream Screen feature is available in the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, with plans for a broader rollout in the future.
