Hypersonic missiles are characterized by their ability to travel at speeds exceeding Mach 5, or approximately 6,200 km/h (3,850 mph), in the upper atmosphere. While slightly slower than intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs), their unique glide vehicle design allows for high maneuverability, enabling them to evade defenses and accurately strike targets.

When paired with a fractional orbital bombardment system (FOBS), these missiles can partially enter orbit before descending, reducing an adversary’s reaction time and bypassing traditional defense mechanisms.
