Air India Express expanding international network

Interarch Plans to Double Revenue to Rs 2500 Crore Air India Express plans to expand its international network and increase its fleet to over 110 aircraft by March 2025. The airline, which recently merged with AIX Connect, currently operates around 90 planes and aims to serve 55 destinations by the end of the fiscal year. Focused on connecting smaller cities and towns with major metros, it also plans to add more overseas destinations, including Bangkok and Phuket. Managing Director Aloke Singh highlighted the strategy of focusing on Tier 2 and 3 cities for both domestic and international short-haul routes, particularly to the Gulf, Middle East, Southeast Asia, and eventually South Asia and the Far East.

Additionally, the airline is integrating its operations with the broader Air India Group network following the merger of AIX Connect. Chief Commercial Officer Ankur Garg mentioned that flights to Bangkok would likely be from Tier 2 cities, while services to Phuket could be launched from metro cities. Air India Express is also considering future destinations in Malaysia, Hong Kong, and CIS countries. Singh emphasized the importance of focusing on key markets and strengthening connectivity between regional cities and Air India’s long-haul services. However, the airline does not plan to introduce premium economy class, sticking to economy and business class on its planes.

By that time, the airline aims to serve 55 destinations, including new routes to Thailand and potential expansions into Southeast Asia and the Far East.

Managing Director Aloke Singh highlighted the airline’s focus on Tier 2 and 3 cities, which are seen as growth areas. The airline plans to offer regional short-haul international services primarily from these cities to destinations in the Gulf, Middle East, Southeast Asia, and eventually South Asia and the Far East.

Chief Commercial Officer Ankur Garg mentioned that services to Bangkok and Phuket are being considered, with flights to Bangkok likely originating from Tier 2 cities and flights to Phuket potentially starting from a metro city. In the future, the airline might also explore routes to Malaysia, Hong Kong, and CIS countries.

Singh emphasized that Air India Express will focus on connecting Tier 2 and 3 cities with Air India’s full-service long-haul network, without overexpanding. The airline does not plan to introduce premium economy class, currently offering only economy and business class on its planes.

The company, which recently went public, achieved a turnover of Rs 1,293 crore in FY24. It raised Rs 600 crore through its initial public offering (IPO), which will be used for capital expenditures, system upgrades, and general corporate purposes.

To boost its capacity, the company is enhancing its existing plants and building a fourth fully integrated plant in Andhra Pradesh. Additionally, Interarch has acquired 51,926 sq mt of land in Gujarat, where it plans to establish a fifth plant, likely starting next year.

Interarch’s expansion aligns with its goal to meet the growing demand for high-quality pre-engineered buildings across India. The company has executed significant projects for major clients such as Asian Paints, Timken, Micron (via Tata Projects Ltd), Asahi Glass, and MG Motors. It currently operates four state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Uttarakhand. As of October 29, 2024, the company’s order book stood at Rs 1,303 crore.
