Government launches pilot internship program (TPISTPS) for youth

On Thursday, October 10, 2024, the Centre launched a portal for India’s top 500 companies to engage in a one-year internship program outlined in the Union Budget. This initiative aims to bridge the gap between the skill sets of unemployable youth and the requirements of employers. The program, officially named The Prime Minister’s Internship Scheme in Top Companies (Scheme) [TPISTPS], is expected to facilitate the onboarding of around 100,000 young individuals into on-the-job training by December 2.

Sources from the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, which oversees the scheme designed to train one crore youth over five years, revealed that this pilot project has a budget of ₹800 crore. Insights gained from this initiative will help refine the scheme’s structure before seeking Cabinet approval for a full-scale rollout.

The portal, pminternship.mca.gov.in, will open for young people aged 21 to 24 to apply starting on Vijaya Dashami, October 12, at 5 p.m. This application window will remain open until October 25 for the first round of internships. Candidates will need to self-certify their educational qualifications and provide their residential pin codes as part of the application process.
