Recently, there have been reports that Apple and Meta (formerly Facebook) engaged in discussions about integrating Meta’s Llama chatbot into iPhones, similar to how Apple has integrated ChatGPT. However, these talks reportedly didn’t progress well due to differences in how Meta operates compared to Apple’s standards.

Apple snubs Meta’s privacy-shy bot

According to Bloomberg, although Apple and Meta (formerly Facebook) did discuss integrating Meta’s Llama chatbot into iPhones earlier this year, those talks did not progress to a formal stage.

h2Sources indicate that Apple’s decision not to proceed was influenced by concerns over Meta’s privacy practices, which Apple perceives as not meeting its stringent standards. Additionally, Apple reportedly believes that a partnership with Meta might not enhance its own brand image.

Regarding their historical relationship, Apple and Facebook were initially close, with Apple integrating Facebook into iPhones. However, tensions arose in 2011 when Apple restricted Facebook’s ability to integrate its own apps within the Facebook app, leading to ongoing disagreements between the two companies since then.

Apple seeks AI partners, shuns Meta

The conflict between Apple and Meta (formerly Facebook) intensified when Apple introduced privacy controls allowing users to opt-out of app tracking, impacting Meta’s ad revenue significantly. This move contributed to Meta’s reputation for intrusive data practices.

Despite showcasing new AI features, Apple lacks its own chatbot and has partnered with OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT into Siri. Apple aims to expand its AI capabilities by potentially integrating more chatbots into its ecosystem, offering users more choices.

While Apple declined to partner with Meta, it continues discussions with other companies. Talks are ongoing with AI startup Anthropic regarding its Claude chatbot, and there are rumors of discussions with Google, though no agreement has been finalized yet.
