6 Planets Align in RARE Formation This Week
Next week, an extraordinary event awaits sky enthusiasts: on June 3, six planets of our solar system will align, forming a rare spectacle visible from Earth. This occurrence, where Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune, and Uranus will be positioned in a straight line, is a remarkable event for anyone fascinated by celestial bodies. This unique alignment, as reported by The Guardian, occurs when all the planets gather on one side of the sun.
To witness this celestial parade, one should be prepared with a telescope on Monday morning. Professor Danny Steigh from Warwick University assures that this event will be visible globally, particularly around sunrise. However, to observe Uranus and Neptune clearly, a quality telescope will be necessary, as they may appear blurry. Additionally, Jupiter and Mercury might appear faint due to their proximity to the Sun.

Professor Danny mentioned that some planets will be visible to the naked eye, although scattered light might pose some challenges. Mars and Saturn will be particularly prominent and easier to spot, appearing before the other planets and slightly higher in the sky. NASA’s mobile app can assist in determining the optimal viewing times and locations. The planets will align diagonally, with Saturn positioned at the top, followed by Neptune, Mars, Uranus, and Mercury. Jupiter will be closest to the horizon.
More planet shows coming soon
Dr. Grant Kennedy from the University of Warwick explains that since we view the Sun from both hemispheres and these planets are relatively close to the Sun, people residing in southern countries will have more opportunities to witness this rare event. Moreover, the good news is that this celestial parade won’t be a fleeting moment; it will span several days.
Additionally, similar occurrences can be expected in August and January of 2025. Furthermore, in February of the following year, a straight-line alignment of seven planets is anticipated. Dr. Kennedy elaborates that such events will occur frequently in the coming years due to the slow movement of outer planets juxtaposed with the Earth’s rapid motion. In March 2080, another alignment of six planets is forecasted, with Venus replacing Neptune in the lineup.
