MSME Breakthrough: 7 Powerful Innovations Unveiled by Union Minister at Mumbai’s IDEMI Centre

In a significant step to bolster India’s MSME sector, Union Minister Shri Jitan Ram Manjhi visited the MSME Technology Centre at the Institute for Design of Electrical Measuring Instruments (IDEMI) in Mumbai on Thursday. The minister’s visit highlighted the centre’s pivotal role in advancing technological innovation and supporting small businesses with cutting-edge solutions.

A Hub of Innovation for MSMEs

During his visit, Shri Manjhi reviewed IDEMI’s contributions to critical sectors, including space technology, defense, healthcare, and agriculture. The centre has developed precision components for ISRO’s Chandrayaan mission, submarine gauges for the Indian Navy, and even robotic tools for neurosurgery—showcasing how MSMEs are driving high-tech advancements.

The minister also explored the advanced AR/VR laboratory, where immersive training programs are designed to upskill entrepreneurs and workers. Presentations on key government schemes like the Credit Guarantee Fund Trust for Micro and Small Enterprises (CGTMSE) and the PM Vishwakarma Scheme demonstrated how financial and skill development support is being extended to small businesses.

Empowering Farmers and Women Entrepreneurs

Beyond high-tech applications, IDEMI has developed practical solutions for grassroots-level challenges. Innovations such as soil testing devices and automated silk reeling machines are empowering farmers and women-led enterprises, bridging the gap between technology and traditional industries.

Shri Manjhi praised IDEMI’s collaborations with organizations like BHEL, GAIL, and BARC, which have led to breakthroughs in calibration tools, industrial automation, and medical equipment. The centre’s expertise in 3D modeling, reverse engineering, and rapid prototyping has enabled MSMEs to compete globally.

Expanding Reach for Greater Impact

Recognizing IDEMI’s success, the Union Minister emphasized the need to expand its services beyond Maharashtra. He suggested replicating its advanced training programs and R&D facilities in other states to ensure more MSMEs benefit from technological advancements.

“IDEMI is a shining example of how MSMEs can drive innovation in critical sectors. Our goal is to make such expertise accessible across India, ensuring small businesses remain at the forefront of the nation’s growth,” said Shri Manjhi.

The Road Ahead

With its proven track record in defense, space, and agro-tech, IDEMI is set to play an even bigger role in India’s ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ mission. The minister’s visit underscores the government’s commitment to strengthening MSMEs through technology, training, and financial support, ensuring they remain key contributors to India’s economic future.

As IDEMI continues to break new ground, its model could serve as a blueprint for integrating MSMEs into high-value industries, fostering innovation, and creating sustainable livelihoods across the country.
