As Delhi residents endure sweltering days with temperatures soaring above 40°C, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has offered a glimmer of hope: thunderstorms and rainfall are expected to sweep across the capital later this week, bringing much-needed respite from the oppressive heat.  

Relief from Relentless Heat 

The capital has been gripped by unseasonably high temperatures, with Monday’s peak hitting 40.4°C—1.4 degrees above the April average. However, a shift in weather patterns is set to disrupt the heatwave. According to the IMD, cloudy skies and moisture-laden easterly winds will usher in cooler conditions starting Tuesday, with thunderstorms and rain likely on Thursday and Friday. Maximum temperatures are anticipated to dip by 1-2°C, settling around 39°C, while nighttime lows could hover near 25°C.  

IMD’s Alerts and Forecast 

The IMD has issued a yellow alert for Tuesday and again from Friday to Saturday, urging residents to stay vigilant. Gusty winds reaching up to 50 km/h, accompanied by isolated drizzles, are expected across the National Capital Region (NCR). These winds, combined with increased cloud cover, will not only lower temperatures but also reduce the dry, dusty conditions that have plagued the city.  

An IMD official highlighted that clearer skies in recent days exacerbated daytime heating, but the return of easterly winds and cloudiness will disrupt this pattern. “The cloud cover, especially at night, acts like a blanket, preventing daytime heat from escaping—this paradoxically cools daytime temperatures while slightly raising nighttime lows,” the official explained.
