7.2 Earthquake ROCKS Peru! Tsunami Coming?

A powerful 7.2-magnitude earthquake hit off the coast of southern Peru on Friday night (June 28) local time, occurring at a depth of 28 kilometers (17 miles). According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the quake struck 8 kilometers (5 miles) west of Atikipa, approximately 600 kilometers (372 miles) south of Lima, the capital.

Reports from Atikipa residents on social media described feeling a very strong and sustained tremor that shook their beds. CCTV footage from Caraveli, a Peruvian town, captured scenes of people quickly evacuating their homes as the tremors were felt in rapid succession.

Peru earthquake, tsunami threat cancelled

7.2 Earthquake ROCKS Peru! Tsunami Coming? Initially, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) issued a warning suggesting the potential for tsunami waves reaching 1 to 3 meters along certain coastal areas of Peru following the 7.2-magnitude earthquake.

However, the PTWC later lifted the alert, confirming there was no ongoing threat of a tsunami. The Peruvian government, on its part, stated that it was actively monitoring the situation and assessing any potential damage.

Peru and much of the South American Pacific coast are located along the boundary of two tectonic plates: the South American plate, which encompasses most of the continent, and the Nazca plate, which extends into the Pacific along most of the coastline.
