Economic Empowerment

The sanitary napkin manufacturing unit in Hyderabad is more than just a production facility; it serves as a significant instrument for women’s economic empowerment in rural communities. The unit employs approximately 60 women in various capacities, including manufacturing and quality control. Additionally, it indirectly supports another 200 women through roles in packaging, promotion, and sales, providing a sustainable source of income for these women. This initiative extends beyond job creation, enabling women to take charge of their financial futures and actively engage in the local economy.

Tackling Period Stigma

Menstruation, a natural biological process, is still enveloped in secrecy and shame in many parts of India. To address this, Amazon launched the Gram Mitr and Pragati Mitr programs in 2021. These programs feature local community ambassadors, who are trusted voices within their neighborhoods, leading educational sessions in schools, anganwadis (rural childcare centers), and self-help groups (SHGs). These sessions cover critical topics such as:

– Healthy Practices: Promoting hygienic practices during menstruation, emphasizing the use of sanitary pads or clean cloth, maintaining proper hygiene, and focusing on diet and nutrition.
– Dispelling Myths: Challenging misconceptions and taboos around menstruation to foster open and honest discussions about this natural process.
– Building Supportive Environments: Connecting women and girls with healthcare resources through ASHA and Anganwadi workers to ensure they have access to essential services and can address their concerns sensitively.

The program has had a significant impact, reaching over 20,000 women and girls to date. This has led to positive behavioral changes, empowering women to manage their health effectively and contributing to a more inclusive and supportive environment for them.

Recognizing the importance of accessibility and affordability in menstrual hygiene management, Amazon has established four state-of-the-art sanitary napkin manufacturing units in strategic locations across India, including Hyderabad, Bangalore, Kolkata, and Chennai. These units have a combined production capacity of 1,200 biodegradable sanitary pads per hour. This initiative not only increases the availability of affordable menstrual hygiene products but also promotes environmental sustainability through the use of eco-friendly materials.
