India modernizes legal system

3 HUGE Changes to Indian Law

Today, on 1st July 2024, marks a significant day for India as three new laws have come into effect, replacing longstanding legal codes. The Indian Penal Code (IPC) is now known as the Indian Justice Code, the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) as the Indian Civil Defense Code, and the Indian Evidence Act (IEA) under a new name.

Additionally, victims of wrongdoing now have the option to file an FIR (First Information Report) from the comfort of their homes using electronic means such as SMS, email, or the official police website.

This marks a notable advancement in accessibility and convenience for reporting incidents to law enforcement.

E-FIR: Report crime online

To register an e-FIR without visiting a police station, you need to visit the official website of your state’s police department. For instance, residents of Delhi should go to the Delhi Police portal. Alternatively, you can send your complaint through any electronic communication medium.

When filing an e-FIR, provide detailed information about the incident, including your name and complete contact details. It’s crucial to attach any relevant documents that support your complaint.

Once submitted, the e-FIR will be forwarded to an investigating officer for initial verification. The officer will conduct a preliminary investigation within a maximum of 14 days to determine if there is a prima facie case.

E-FIR: Faster reporting, quicker justice

When you submit a complaint through electronic communication, it will be recorded within three days, and an FIR will be registered promptly.

After the completion of the search report within 24 hours, it will be presented before the court.

The complainant will receive a free copy of the FIR.
