An official from IIT Kharagpur announced plans to reassess its mental health initiatives following the tragic incident where a third-year BTech student was discovered deceased on campus. Director V.K. Tewari, along with dean of students Bhargav Maitra and other administrators, convened a meeting on Tuesday to discuss the matter. The institute currently offers a comprehensive array of counseling services aimed at supporting students’ mental health needs. However, the recent death indicates areas where improvements are necessary, according to the official’s statement.

 

IIT Kharagpur reviews mental health services

An institute official mentioned that they will soon introduce new guidelines for their mental health programs. Regarding Devika Pillai, the student who passed away, the official noted that she had utilized counseling services at the institute. They also stated that they are reviewing all records to understand any shortcomings that may have contributed to the incident.

In a Facebook post, Awaaz, IIT Kharagpur’s student media body, expressed dismay over the situation, noting it as the second tragic incident within the past year.
