NYC Marathon Champions Crowned Today

2024 NYC Marathon: A Star-Studded Field Catch the 2024 TCS New York City Marathon on Channel 7 WABC-TV, with coverage starting at 7:00 a.m. on Sunday, November 3. Defending champions Tamirat Tola and Hellen Obiri are vying to become the first repeat champions in nearly a decade.

“It wasn’t easy winning in New York. Every athlete here is determined to succeed,” said Tola, who set a record on this course last year. “I’m here to win again, and I’m ready for it.”

Coverage on Channel 7 and ABC 7 New York’s streaming platforms starts with a pre-show at 7:00 a.m., with the race itself beginning at 8:00 a.m.

If Tola, 33, from Ethiopia, wins, he’ll be the first man to defend his title since Geoffrey Mutai of Kenya won back-to-back races in 2011 and 2013 (with the 2012 race canceled due to Superstorm Sandy). Tola could also make history as only the second runner to win both an Olympic gold and the NYC Marathon in the same year, a feat last achieved by Peres Jepchirchir of Kenya in 2021.

Tola recently won at the Paris Olympics with a record-setting time, noting similarities between the New York and Paris marathon courses due to their hilly terrain. To defend his title, he’ll face a competitive field, including previous champions Geoffrey Kamworor (2017, 2019), Albert Korir (2021), and Evans Chebet (2022), all from Kenya. Other contenders include Belgium’s silver medalist Bashir Abdi, with top U.S. runners Conner Mantz and Clayton Young, who placed in the top 10 in Paris.

Obiri, a 34-year-old from Kenya and bronze medalist at the Paris Olympics, aims to become the first woman to win consecutive NYC Marathons since Mary Keitany’s three-time streak from 2014-2016. She faces strong competition from previous champions Sharon Lokedi (2022) and Edna Kiplagat (2010), both from Kenya, and top American runners Dakotah Popehn and Jenny Simpson.

The wheelchair division, led by Swiss athletes Marcel Hug and Manuela Schär, will feature a star-studded field. Hug has claimed victory in every race he’s entered this year, including the Paris Paralympics.

2024 NYC Marathon: A Star-Studded Field The NYC Marathon has been held since 1970, with over 50,000 runners finishing in recent years. This year, organizers added a “Team for Climate” entry option, allowing runners to donate $3,000 toward carbon offsets for entry. After a warm week, race day is expected to cool to around 50°F (10°C).

The 26.2-mile course spans all five New York City boroughs, starting on Staten Island, crossing the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge into Brooklyn and Queens, moving into Manhattan, the Bronx, and ending back in Manhattan at Central Park. The course is closed to traffic throughout the event.

NYC Marathon Kicks Off Today

2024 NYC Marathon: A Star-Studded Field The New York City Marathon is set for Sunday, with over 50,000 runners from more than 150 countries expected to participate. The winners in both the men’s and women’s divisions will each take home $100,000.

This iconic race begins on Staten Island and concludes in Central Park. Defending champions Tamirat Tola and Hellen Obiri are both aiming for consecutive wins, a feat that hasn’t been achieved in nearly a decade. Tola, who set a course record last year, hopes to be the first man to win both Olympic gold and the NYC Marathon in the same year, following in the footsteps of Kenya’s Peres Jepchirchir, who did so in 2021 for the women’s category.

Tola will face fierce competition from past champions including Geoffrey Kamworor (2017, 2019), Albert Korir (2021), and Evans Chebet (2022), all from Kenya. Obiri also has a strong field to contend with, which includes 2022 winner Sharon Lokedi and 2010 winner Edna Kiplagat, both from Kenya. Notable American runners Dakotah Popehn and Jenny Simpson will also compete.

Fans can stay updated and track participants using the New York Road Runners app, and live results will be available. ESPN2 will broadcast the marathon starting at 8 a.m. ET.
