While the intense summer heat was expected to subside due to the heavy rains, the severe accidents occurring in different places indicate that the troubles have worsened.

Unauthorized Hoarding Collapse

Hoarding Not Included in Limca Book of Records – Following the accident, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued a statement highlighting that the advertisement board was erected without their authorization, calling the situation unacceptable.

According to the BMC’s statement, the hoarding with petrol pump power on the Eastern Express Highway in Pant Nagar is unauthorized and was not approved by the Municipal Corporation. This hoarding, which is approximately 17,040 square feet in size, would have qualified for the Limca Book of Records as the largest hoarding, had it been registered.

BMC Blames Railways

The BMC stated that there were four hoardings at the accident site, all approved by the ACP (Administration) for the Commissioner of Police (Railway Mumbai). “The BMC did not obtain any permission or NOC from the agency or the Railway before installing the hoardings.”

FIR Against Hoarding Agency

A complaint has been filed against M/S Ego Media, the agency responsible for the billboard, and the BMC has also lodged an FIR against them. The BMC permits hoardings of up to 40 x 40 square feet, with smaller hoardings being 120 x 120 square feet. Currently, the Assistant Commissioner of BMC N Ward has issued a notice to the agency, demanding the immediate removal of all their hoardings that violate BMC’s legal permissions.

BMC Chief: Hoardings Illegal

BMC Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani, speaking to journalists after visiting the BMC Disaster Control Classroom, said, “This was an illegal hoarding. At the site of the incident, four hoardings were erected on railway land, one of which has collapsed. BMC has been frequently criticized for hoardings since last year. In 2023, an attempt was made to sabotage hoardings near Chheda Nagar Junction in Delhi by dusting them with powder. In that case as well, BMC filed an FIR.”
