Train crash near New Jalpaiguri injures 16

In New Delhi, a senior North Frontier Railway (NFR) official reported that at least one loco pilot lost their life and 16 individuals sustained serious injuries when the Sealdah-bound 13174 Kanchanjungha Express collided with a goods train near New Jalpaiguri on Monday morning. The accident happened around 9 am close to Rangapani, near the New Jalpaiguri station, leading to the derailment of at least two rear compartments of the Kanchanjungha Express.

 

Goods train rear-ends express, derails coaches

The locomotive of the goods train hit the express train from behind, resulting in severe damage and the derailment of several compartments. According to the divisional railway manager (DRM) of NFR’s Katihar division, the collision’s impact caused the rear compartments of the train to derail near Rangapani station, which is about seven kilometers from New Jalpaiguri station.

 

Mamata: Shocked by Darjeeling train accident.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her shock and concern over the incident. In a post on X, she stated, “Shocked to learn about a tragic train accident in the Phansidewa area of Darjeeling district. While details are awaited, the Kanchenjunga Express has reportedly been hit by a goods train.” She added that the DM, SP, doctors, ambulances, and disaster teams have been dispatched to the site for rescue operations.

The 13174 Kanchanjungha Express was traveling from Agartala to Sealdah when the accident occurred. Rescue operations have been initiated, and disaster response teams are offering medical assistance and support to the affected passengers.
