106% Surge: EV Charging Sessions Explode in 2023
The rapid growth of the US electric vehicle (EV) market can be observed in several ways: the increasing number of EVs on the road, the frequency with which we encounter them on our daily commutes, and the occupancy rates of EV charging stations. Electrify America’s 2023 statistics further highlight this growth, reflecting the surge in EV adoption through increased usage of their charging network.
In 2023, Electrify America saw a 106% increase in charging sessions compared to 2022. This rise is even more significant when considering the gigawatt-hours (GWh) dispensed, which grew by 118%. Specifically, the number of charging sessions jumped from 5.3 million in 2022 to 10.9 million in 2023, while the GWh dispensed rose from 175 GWh to over 380 GWh during the same period. These figures not only indicate a higher demand for EV charging but also suggest a substantial increase in EV ownership.
EV usage surging rapidly
The growth in EV usage is substantial. Electrify America reports that in 2023, its charging sessions facilitated over 1.3 billion miles of electric driving, which translated to saving more than 52 million gallons of gasoline.
The network has expanded to include over 900 charging stations and 4,000+ fast chargers, covering 47 US states and 6 Canadian provinces, including Washington, D.C. Electrify America aims to add at least 5,000 individual charging ports by 2024. While the network’s growth is part of the reason for the increase in charging sessions and GWh dispensed, the actual expansion of charging sessions and energy dispensed has far outpaced the network’s physical growth.
Despite the broader challenges, this progress is a positive sign. Keep calm and charge on.
