Vellayan Subbiah: EY Entrepreneur 2024
1 Leader From India SHOCKS the World
Vellayan Subbiah, Executive Vice-Chairman of Tube Investments of India (TII) and Chairman of Cholamandalam Investment and Finance Co Ltd., has been honored with the prestigious EY World Entrepreneur Of The Year 2024 title. This marks the fourth time an Indian entrepreneur has received this esteemed recognition, following NR Narayana Murthy, Uday Kotak, and Kiran Majumdar Shaw.
Subbiah, who previously won the EY Entrepreneur of the Year award for India in 2023, holds a Bachelor of Technology in Civil Engineering from IIT Madras and a Master’s in Business Administration from the University of Michigan, USA. India stands out as the only country within EY regions to achieve this feat four times.
Turnaround leader, growth driver
Subbiah commenced his professional journey as an engineer before transitioning into a role as a strategic consultant. Serving as the Managing Director of Cholamandalam Investment and Finance from August 19, 2010, to August 18, 2017, he steered the company through challenging times arising from a troubled partnership.
In November 2020, Subbiah’s leadership skills led to his appointment as the Chairman of the Murugappa Group’s firm. Under his guidance, the company’s market capitalization surged by an impressive 60-fold. Additionally, in 2018, he assumed the role of Managing Director at Tube Investments of India (TII), a venerable manufacturing company with a 70-year legacy. Since assuming this position, Subbiah has played a pivotal role in catapulting TII’s share price to grow by 13 times.
Legacy, growth, innovation, impact
TII’s subsidiary, CG Power, has recently embarked on constructing India’s inaugural outsourced semiconductor and test facility, marking a significant milestone. Expressing his gratitude upon receiving the EY World Entrepreneur Of The Year award in Monaco, Subbiah stated, “I am deeply honored and grateful for this recognition.
Coming from a fourth-generation family business, entrepreneurship is ingrained in me. I draw inspiration from those who preceded me and those who will follow. I strongly believe that by viewing challenges as opportunities and committing to continuous self-improvement, we can surpass any limit.” Rajiv Memani, Chairman and CEO at EY India, commended Subbiah’s achievements, highlighting his ability to scale and transform businesses significantly, driven by customer-centricity, innovation, and a commitment to long-term sustainability.
Impactful leader, empowering spirit
Carmine Di Sibio, EY Global Chairman and CEO, emphasized that Subbiah’s story transcends mere numerical achievements. He praised Subbiah’s humble and personable leadership style, as well as his philosophy of empowering others to “enter a better life,” which epitomizes the essence of being named EY World Entrepreneur Of The Year. Subbiah emerged victorious from a pool of nearly 5,000 program participants, which included 51 winners from 47 countries and jurisdictions vying for the global title.
This year, the award criteria focused on four key aspects: entrepreneurial spirit, purpose, growth, and impact. Over the past decade, India has produced three winners: Uday Kotak in 2014, Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw in 2020, and now Vellayan Subbiah in 2024, with Narayana Murthy securing the award in 2003.
